"...you invent something fanciful in the middle that makes sense out of all of it..."  

While finishing up yesterday's Interbay track drop, "Retcon," I found a spoken word sample that I'd sourced...but didn't really fit the vibe of the song.  Still, I was intrigued by the sample.  So, immediately after posting "Retcon," I opened up a new project file and started working around that spoken word sample.  

"Little Men Riding Big Elephants" is the result of that effort--so, while there's very little musically or thematically that connect these two Interbay tracks, to me...they will always be linked.  

This is a lush ambient trance house tune.  It reminds me of 90s dance acts like Deep Forest, Aquamarine, The Beloved, The Orb, and even Chicane.  

In a startling admission, this is the first time that I've played a one shot sample with a sampler, rather than simply just dropping variations of that sample into the piaylist.  I remember using hardware samplers in the late 80s and 90s, but when moving to laptop...the workflow was so different, I just never tried doing it the original way...until this track.  So, when you hear that lush keyboard chord that dominates this track--that's me playing the sample.  

...and maybe doing it that way influenced the vibe of the track, taking me back to when these sounds were more prevalent (and popular.)  

It is not a peak time big room floor filler, it is a bit more subtle, a bit more moody vibes--but still with a danceable beat.  It is strange...one way I'd describe this is as somehow more "adult" than many other Interbay tracks.  Not sure where that idea comes from--perhaps, you can listen to "Little Men Riding Big Elephants" and see if you can hear what I'm talking about.  (If you do, please let me know!)  

While I like how evocative the analogy used in the spoken word sample that I picked for the title of this track is...when looking for an appropriate thumbnail image for it, I was confronted with very strong opinions and arguments letting me know that "elephant rides" should be avoided, for the sake of the animals.  I, myself, have never ridden an elephant (at the time, I was large enough that I legitimately worried for the health of even an elephant that would be burdened to carry me.  (Thankfully, I've Mounjaro'd out of that unhealthy situation...but I'm still unlikely to ride an elephant.)  

...so, rather than perpetuate a bad thing, the thumbnail is a repurposed political cartoon from the McKinley presidency.  It works.  ;)  

I had something slower and more atmospheric planned to drop today--as I often like to drop slower, moodier, prettier songs on a Sunday--but I was so excited to share this unexpected (and quickly produced) track, that I'll hold onto that other song a little longer.
