Common Pipistrelle Social calls

This is the Hogsmill river near the waste transfer station at Villiers road. There is a lot going on: -wind through poplar leaves, water running, dump lorries reversing but the birds get on with their lives.

Sometimes it is nice to walk over a nature reserve and record bird sound but there are a lot of obstacles in the way including dogwalkers and chainsaws. In the first track I was setting up my rig to record the ambient sound when piping dog whistles dominated the sound of a mix flock of blue, great and long - tailed tits flying along the hedgerow. In the middle of the recording the dog, completely out of control, tries to snatch my rig and nearly knocks me over. Do I get an apology from the owner? listen and see

I am recording birds in the hedgerow. A man blows a whistle to retrieve his dog. The dog takes no notice. The man calls. The dog runs in a big circle around me. I move away as I want to protect my equipment. The dog runs, which  pounds the wet earth as it is a big muscular animal. The man yells, the dog hits me full in the chest, the man doesn't apologize. I carry on recording.

Welcome to Warren Farm where you can see skylarks, kestrels and red kites with no trouble at all. I watched a buzzard use the subterfuge  of a railway cutting but was mobbed by crows. You can cross the railway lines into Hanwell Meads and listen to a brook as it tumbles down the slope towards the Grand Union Canal.

I was fascinated by the Winterwatch programme where a Lesser Water Boatman was recorded using a hydrophone sliding his penis over his abdomen to try and attract a mate. This was also recorded using a hydrophone at 3 locations 29.1.23. There was still ice in the pond although it wasn't apparent at first and when it made contact with the contact mic there was a graunchy noise (especially towards the end). Note the Great Tit calling at the beginning and insect activity after 1.00 minute for 22 seconds. I couldn't tell if it was a Lesser Water Boatman but it sounded very similar.

I recorded the frogs in my pond at the height of laying their spawn with a hydrophone which cuts out a lot of the background noise. The hydrophone must be left for ten minutes or so, before they continue singing. Then a series of purrs and loud roars as they move awkwardly around the vegetation
