Trumpeter Kevin Dean was raised in the United States and came to Canada to teach at St. Francis Xavier University in 1980, where he helped design the first jazz curriculum. He has been recorded on over 30 albums and has released 13 as leader or co-leader. Kevin maintains his position of professor at McGill teaching trumpet, jazz composition, improvisation and jazz performance practice.

Part 2: Allan Gilliland and Farhad Khosravi

This episode features music from Bent River Records artists' newly released albums. Hosted by Mark Rodgers and our Bent River Records interns!

Allan Gilliland is one of Canada’s busiest composers, having written music for solo instruments, orchestra, choir, brass quintet, wind ensemble, big band, film, television and theatre. His music has been performed and broadcast by ensembles around the world including the: Edmonton Symphony, National Youth Choir, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, and the brass section of the New York Philharmonic. 

Farhad Khosravi is an Edmonton-based composer and santur player. Farhad released his sophomore album titled Mosàfer in 2020 – a santur and percussion duo that translates some of the deepest existential Persian poetries into instrumental music. He is also the winner of the 2020 Edmonton Music Prize!

Part 1: Mike Rud

Mike Rud is a Juno Award-winning guitarist and composer, who has performed alongside such musicians as Herb Ellis and Joey DeFrancesco. Beyond writing and arranging, Mike is a music educator and has taught at McGill University, Western Washington University, Carleton University, and Selkirk College.

ROYA is a songstress blending pop, jazz, and her middle eastern roots into a soulful, spirited expression of truth. Blending the sounds of acoustic guitars, folk rhythms, and jazz-infused melodies, ROYA captivates her audiences with direct but poetic encounters. Her voice, both sweet and sultry, pairs well with an acoustic guitar and the midnight sun.
