We welcome Michelle Tomlinson a.k.a Pianika, for the fourth edition of Soundscapes. Soundscapes feature artists who specialize in crafting unique compositions that transport listeners on an immersive journey through the sonic landscape.

Hailing from the picturesque landscapes of Aotearoa, also known as New Zealand, Pianika embarks on a musical journey that seamlessly intertwines ambient atmospheres with the pulsating rhythms of Deep House. Rooted in a familial tapestry of musical influences, Pianika's journey into electronic music began with a childhood adorned by the melodies of piano, guitar, and flute. However, it wasn't until 2020 that she delved into music production, unleashing a torrent of creativity that has since sculpted her signature sound.

Fascinated by the power of music to paint a scene or an emotion, Pianika's sonic palette traverses a kaleidoscope of genres, but she shines when making ambient and deep house tunes. Artists like Flume, ODESZA, Petit Biscuit, and KAASI inspire her delicate yet danceable compositions. Enamoured by the enchanting allure of festivals, Pianika finds solace amidst the vibrant energy of gatherings such as  Splore, Shipwrecked, Aum, and Relish in New Zealand, and Garbicz Festival and Mystic Creatures, in Northern Europe. Pianika recently released her first EP "PISCES." It's full of soft, lush, dreamy sounds that feel like a lullaby. Over the next few months, Pianika has plans to release an ambient album, along with several remixes and collaborations through her label, NIKAU.

Through this guest mix, Pianika invites listeners to embrace the subtleties of their own life experiences. Like a sonic wine tasting, each track unfolds like a delicate bouquet, offering notes of awe, relief, and bliss, while hinting at the discomfort at the edges of one's comfort zone. Through her music, Pianika implores listeners to breathe into the edges of their lives, embracing the imperfections that define the fully lived and inhabited life. Enjoy the mix!

"sosinad" (meaning "whispers" in English) invites listeners to pause and reflect in our increasingly noisy world. While society often rewards the loudest voices, this ambient piece reminds us that true power and meaning can be found in quieter moments. Recorded in 2020 using analog tape to capture the warmth and subtle imperfections of vintage recording methods, the track was later digitalized to blend the richness of old-school techniques with modern accessibility. "sosinad" challenges us to listen more closely, not just to the gentle sounds around us, but to the whispers of our own intuition and the soft-spoken wisdom that often goes unheard in the daily cacophony of life.

Hailing from Estonia, Bent Rushmore is a standout artist in the blues and electronic music scenes. He is best known for his role as the lead guitarist in the popular band, Köömes.

Bent's formative years were shaped under the shadow of the Soviet Union, where Estonia was part of the communist superpower. During that era, popular western genres like disco and rock'n'roll were prohibited, forcing these music styles into the underground. Bent's father, a taxi driver by day, clandestinely smuggled vinyl records at night. He purchased LPs from visiting foreigners, recorded the music on cassette tapes, and discreetly distributed these to local DJs and music enthusiasts. This not only served as a supplemental income but also exposed Bent to a vast array of music.

Bent took part in this covert operation, often pressing the "record" and "dolby" buttons during these recording sessions. It was through these experiences that Bent's profound appreciation for music was kindled. By the 90s, while still in high school, Bent began to DJ, using his father's music collection as his foundation.

Despite his early immersion in music, it wasn't until 2005 that Bent picked up an instrument - an electric guitar. While showing off his newfound skills playing Nirvana songs, he discovered that his good friend had secretly purchased a bass guitar and had been practicing. This revelation led to the formation of the band "Köömes." The two friends enlisted a drummer, began writing songs, and started rehearsing in the drummer's basement.

Köömes has since evolved, expanding into a six-member rock band with four studio albums under its belt. The band's music has gained significant airplay on Estonian radios and has graced stages across the country.

While Bent continues to contribute to Köömes, he has also pursued his solo career. In 2017, he released his first solo album "Soi Dog," a melancholic blues album that reflects on the struggles and mundanity of everyday life. The album, released on digital platforms and vinyl, grapples with existential questions, acknowledging our collective struggle to find meaning in life.

In 2018, Bent ventured into electronic music production, experimenting with keyboards and synthesizers. This new direction culminated in the 2019 release of his meditative album "Steps to Calmness." Bent describes the album as a soothing balm for our chaotic world, hoping that his music can help listeners find inner tranquility.

Bent's musical journey is far from over. He continues to craft new music and anticipates future releases in both the blues and electronic genres. Stay tuned for more from this diverse and ever-evolving artist.
