After a busy year releasing records from E.R.P., Hieroglyphic Being, and Kyle Hall, the Spanish Apnea imprint closes out 2023 with a three-tracker from Tbilisi’s https://soundcloud.com/hamatsuki. Kicking off the release, the Georgian Bassiani resident reissues ‘Sea Of Nothingness’, originally released on the local Dream Machine Records. Sustained lo-fi pads guide the way across misty waters, gated vocals echoing like sirens as cosmic swells of acid permeate its nearly eight-minute run-time. ‘Sea Of Nothingness’ then makes way for two cuts from Hamatsuki’s self-released 2021 ‘Oldies’ album, starting with ‘Dance And Cry’. It’s an emotive trip through mythical mountain forests, complete with saturated arpeggio melodies, subtle percussion and weighty bass bursts, before title track ‘Sultikveteba’ closes out this vinyl-only collage of re-releases. Hamatsuki’s ‘Sultikveteba’ sees the Fantastic Planet and Mind Controller Rectifier artist embark on an evocative journey boasting crunchy low-end, hypnotic vocals and warm melodies, carefully laid out over its stripped-back rhythm and dropping the curtain on this hugely versatile EP brimming with feeling.

11th November sees dynamic duo Hiver return to cherished Belgium imprint, Curle Recordings, with their latest EP, entitled ‘Soundescence’.   
 
This excellent four-track offering is the Italian pairing’s third EP on Curle, following on from ‘Blue Aconite’ in 2013 and ‘Same Mistake Twice’ last year, which garnered them support from techno heavyweights such as Sven Väth, Laurent Garnier and Efdemin.
 
Curle, who recently celebrated their 10th anniversary, have fast become one of the most exciting and respected underground labels in the game. Past releases by the likes of Hiver, as well as prolific DJ/producer, Matthew Herbert, whose timeless track ‘See You On Monday’ was recently reissued by them, has contributed towards this success.
 
Kicking off the release is the title-named track, ‘Soundescence’, displaying the melodic, psychedelic sound Hiver has been praised for previously. Delicate synth patterns perfectly bled with the understated drums and percussive elements. This ethereal approach to Techno continues on the following deep-groover, ‘One More Snooze’.
 
The B-side opener, ‘Phonotis’, immediately breaks the silence with a steady 4/4 rhythm, seeing a squelchy synth bassline, warm pads and floating atmospheric textures scattered throughout the six-minute number.
 
Closing the EP is ‘Floor Diving’, which once again showcase Hiver’s sleek and seductive style of dance music that is made for the dark, underground clubs of Europe and beyond.

The Green Child is the long distance musical collaboration of Mikey Young and Raven Mahon, who met in 2013 when their bands, Total Control and Grass Widow played a show in Oakland, California. They started writing songs together in Australia in 2014 and the project has been on a slow burn since. Their self-titled debut album is the culmination of few years of putting ideas together internationally and periodically recording in Mikey's home studio. Some of the lyrical content and the band's name was inspired by Herbert Read's 1935 utopian, communist, sci-fi novel called The Green Child.

With such a choice name, it’s no surprise that The Green Child draw their sound from an illusory past as much as they stalk into pastures new. Broadly retro-futuristic in scope, verdant acres of lushly evocative synthesizers and blippy drum machines underpin most of their upbeat yet decidedly uncanny songs. Raven’s calmly scenic and measured vocal flits like a will-o’-the-wisp throughout the tracks, proffering a guiding hand as she walks us through the often eerie, electronic concoctions.

‘Traveler’ opens the album all redolent, beat-minded and labyrinthine. Twisting melody lines swirl and envelop like a sandstorm, whilst Raven coolly projects on a “solitary man” lost to “green oblivion”. Similarly, ‘Her Majesty II’ glistens with its playful yet plaintive vocal and iridescent arpeggios, whilst ‘Bertha’ slows things down with tumbling chimes and stately use of space.

The Green Child are adept at atmosphere, their songs are refined from gently unfolding ideas that never fail to realise and build to their potential. Tracks like ‘Walking Distance’ (featuring Al Montfort on saxophone) and ‘New Years Eve’ are exercises in evolved composition with ideas budding off and blossoming into truly resonant dimensions. The band’s cover of ‘Marie Elene’ (by Keith Pearson) and closing track ‘Destroyer’ are further crowning achievements, both pieces subtly handled with poise and ample melancholic grandeur. The Green Child fix their sights on the heights they want to reach within their songs and much like the project itself don’t want to rush to the finish line. When it becomes more about the unfurling journey, why not take the time to enjoy the trip and burn slower?

‘The Green Child’ is due for release on January 12th through Upset The Rhythm on 180g black vinyl, accompanied by some spirited sleeve design by James Vinciguerra.

The third release for La Freund Recordings comes from Amsterdam resident Beraber. Consisting of four strong and very diverse tracks and a jazzy, piano-heavy remix by Chicago House legend Vincent Floyd, Sun Ritual works just as well in the club as it does at home.

All tracks were written and produced during the last two years, combining digital instruments like the Korg M1 and Yamaha DX7 with analog gear like the Roland Juno-6 and Korg MS-10. Kicking things off on the A-side is title track Sun Ritual, a positive and warm tune with lush chords and arpeggiated synths. After a surprising outro, it gets the remix treatment by Deep House pioneer Vincent Floyd, who adds multiple layers to it and delivers a stunning, dreamy eight-minute take on the original.

The flipside opens with Ugly, a soulful club workout with a deep bassline, rolling drums with crisp hi-hats and a hypnotic melody. Next up is Introspect, a serious Electro-tinged cut with heavy Juno chords building up tension as the track evolves. Rounding it up nicely, Forest Rain treats us to an intimate broken-beat affair laced with Rhodes chords and field recordings from Bali.

Beraber - the alias of Amsterdam's Barış Akardere - is a versatile producer and DJ who transitioned from hip-hop production and composition for film to focus on underground house music. He’s released music through labels like Release/Sustain, Semi Delicious and Lagaffe tales. His latest release, Gentle Actions, is out now via Carista’s United Identities imprint. 

Always adding bits to his studio setup, from vintage drum machines to analog and FM synths, his sound is constantly evolving. Rather than sticking to a single genre, his music is defined by its soulful and introspective quality - evident in his productions, DJ sets and monthly radioshow ‘Gentle Actions’ on Amsterdam’s RRFM. 

As a DJ he’s performed across the Netherlands at festivals like Lowlands and Best Kept Secret, renowned venues like De School and Radio Radio, and made appearances on platforms such as Dekmantel, Boiler Room and NTS.
