A segment of my 3 hour set that was recorded live during the 2013 Ostgut Ton resident's night at Berghain.

Having had plenty of time to digest the first trio of “Textures” from Sawlin & Subjected, it’s time to unleash the next three works from EDLX’s newest recruits. 

‘Foreign Awake Pt.1’ set the tone with a series of strung out, spacy vistas. Three chillingly subtle and pensive pieces, far removed from the pair’s usual brew of anxious, distortion-heavy techno productions that can be found on their co-run Vault Series outlet. Using EDLX to step away from the dancefloor a little, ‘Foreign Awake Pt.1’ saw the Berlin-based duo tap into headier climes using loops and tingling atmospheres with the faintest of heartbeats. ‘Foreign Awake Pt.2’ picks up the pace, however, with three more “Textures” halfway between ‘Pt.1’’s ethereal wanderings and the pair’s deeper Vault Series offerings. 

On the A-side “Texture 1.1” and “Texture 1.2” wraps typical Vault tropes with acid-washed melodies and grainy distorted pads, turning two rusty, hydraulic workouts into weirder and warmer dancefloor reliefs. “Texture 5” then, on the B-side, concludes with more yin and yang experiments, pooling ‘Foreign Awake’’s gentler, dream-like sentiments together with punishing bass, splices of hats and mechanical modulations that keep the reverie in check; a must for Sawlin & Subjected fans, and anyone who likes their techno a little on the stranger side.

Deep Concentration: The Grey Area mix 




The Grey Area mix is a collection of celebral minimalism from which is a speciality of Robert Hood.   Never before has there been an illustration of the many values of "grey" within the genre we call Minimal.
While Minimal is now a sound all on its own which varies from region to region, deep concentration takes you through the mind of one of it's pioneers for a close analysis of this particular variation. The Grey Area.

The Grey Area title refers to Rob's vision of Detroit techno and electronic music as the sound that occupied the forgotten zones of Detroit, the areas that became utilised for warehouse parties back in the day, and still humm and whirr with the timeless sound of technology long after the actual heavy indutry has gone. There's a soulfully longing thread tying the tracks together, from the opening anonymous tracks to Maurizio's 'M4.5' and on into previously unobserved depths with a slew of exclsuive and unreleased M-Plant style killers this is eactly the kind of selection that has won Mr. Hood a legion of devoted fans across the world, and has massively influenced the sound of the scene's biggest clubs, with Dettmann and Klock's brand of stripped but powerful techno house owing a massive debt to his sound. We're struggling to name many of the tracks here which is one of the best features of this mix, it's so fresh much of it hasn't even seen the light of day yet but we'd be massively grateful if any of the keener ears out there (or Hood himself) would like to send us a tracklist! Especially track 14, or 17, or 21, what the f**k are they?! If the Fabric mix left you asking for something that little bit deeper and nastier you can't sleep on this righteous mix. ESSENTIAL PURCAHSE!

Coyote   keeps a-comin'. The next EP on the upstart imprint arrives via Spokes, co-founder of   Loose Synths , the ever-reliable emporium of good vibes – something which "Lo Pan Strikes" ably attests to. In a word it's 'sinogrime', but whereas the original foundations were ( extremely loosely ) built upon a more dark and dystopian glance Eastwards, here the thick grey smog has cleared. Heck, there's not even that much grime in it. 

The juxtaposition between restless percussive rattles and soft-tone flourishes is pushed to the nth degree, bucked by grand melodic swells lurching deep in the back and instrumental accoutrements that we can't quite place. A shaker, probably; a timpani, perhaps. All told, the delicately balanced "Lo Pan Strikes" serves to conjure a more fragrant and agreeable image of the Orient. Which begs the question: have you ever seen Yamaneko and Spokes in the same room together? We thought not.

Recorded live on Holy Saturday at the infamous Snax Party in Berghain, this is the first 3 hours of an extended set. "Once a year in honor of the old Ostgut tradition, Berghain closes its doors to the straight crowd and unleashes a no-holds barred gay marathon where anything goes. Due to the circumstances of it being a different crowd and different vibe, I figured I'd upload the set which is a bit harder and funkier than I typically play." -DZ
