A new artist on TT! 

Athlete Whippet join the Toy Tonics family! The London/ Berlin-based duo makes a sound that is based on futuristic breakbeats combined with deep jazz chord progressions and a kind of funk that sounds more like it was made in 2100 than in a year behind us. Definitely not a retro record. The “Vesta EP” is a further proof that the connection between London and Berlin, that has been build by several Toy Tonics artists (Cody Currie is the latest in the gang), is becoming a strong one. The combination of the Berlin dancefloor sound and the UK jazz fusion soul is changing the scene and creating new moods. Neo soul and house, broken beats and disco… There are a lot of things happening in that new world and Athlete Whippet could be a strong player in that sound.

Heist Recordings regulars and all-time good guys Fouk are back! Their ‘Blue Steel’ EP is filled with their signature grooves, chords and samples and might surprise a few of you out there. The sound design is top notch as always and there’s some rough edges on these tracks for an added bit of depth and personality. Next to that, the boys collaborated with the talented Dutch saxophone player Rebiere, who features on the title track. The EP holds 3 originals and a beautiful remix by Girls of the Internet. We can assure you that this EP on Heist - their fourth on Heist since their critically acclaimed ‘Kill Frenzy’ EP back in 2015 - is one you don’t want to miss.

The EP kicks off with the gritty live jam ‘Blue Steel’, where Rebiere’s saxophone solo is accompanied by a killer bass line and some lovely off-kilter percussion. It’s deep, it’s jazzy and at the same time it’s a track that packs some serious peak-time punch.

‘Don’t you want to Boogie’ ups the tempo and energy and can only be described as a 100% feel good filter-house track. It’s got loops, loops and then some more loops. Mesmerizing, funky and unpretentious: this one is just here to boogie.

The B1 is reserved for the low end thump of the Girls of the internet remix of ‘Blue Steel’. After having released his album ‘Girls FM’ only a few months back and a remix compilation for UNKLE, we’re glad he found the time to work on the remix and deliver this gem of a track. GOTI goes for an eyes shut, dancing-in-your-bedroom version with smooth keys accompanying the sax solo.
Last but not least, ‘Money’ shows yet another side of Fouk’s sound, where we see the boys throwing in some beefed up disco funk. The tongue-in-cheek vocals and the squeaking acid line recorded over at the Dam Swindle studio together make for a track that oozes fun and good vibes.

Hard to believe it’s been 3 years since Jungle Fire first graced the RNT Catalog, and now the west coast boys of summer are back with a 5-track remix EP of varied Latin soul funk vibes, reimagined by a stellar cast of remixers. On the A-side, Colombian juggernaut Felipe Gordon takes Atómico fully nuclear with a stomping bass-heavy house remix, and JKriv goes elektrik with his Elektrikossa dub that sprinkles dubbed out and acid elements over a pulsating rubbery groove. On the flip, turntablist Nu-Mark delivers a punchy breakbeat take on Atómico, Jungle Fire member Patrick Bailey goes full-on boogie vibes with his Snake In Da Bronx Dub of La Kossa, and the record winds down with the dubby halftime flavor of Samual Miles remix of Biri Biri. Relentless & excellent, Wind Horse Records founder Hamza continues his journey by traversing worldwide waveforms through the ‘Banjara’ series. Banjara Spain & South America illustrates the amazing repertoire that this sonic genius possesses, by introducing listeners to the sounds & vibes from Espana & the Americas. 

The compilation kicks off with ‘Los Invisibles’, which drips of summertime flavors & musical notes inspired by the Latin sunshine. The track is playful, combining vocal stabs, organic rhythms & notes of the piano for a perfect opener. Talented Colombian DJ & producer Juan Mejia steps up with the beautifully constructed track ‘Sazon’, teaming up with Hamza on remix duties to deliver a BOMBA. Sultry trumpets & Spanish guitar riffs compliment a simple yet ethereal groove with heavenly vocals. ‘Latina’ is playful, energetic & extremely bouncy (we mean it!). A funk-driven bassline powers this track, joining familiar accompanying instruments & elements, making this a secret recipe for dance debauchery. 

Next up, Hamza delivers a soulful yet classically constructed house music tune called ‘Ritmo Del Amor’ that has moments of emotional suspension & sections of addictive rhythms. Cleverly layered percussions meet squelches of acid, uplifting vocals & gorgeous guitar strums, making for a proper dancefloor package. Juan Mejia teams up with Hamza once more on ‘Black Sugar’, a quirky track that’s fun & feisty. J&M Brothers join Hamza on the next jam called ‘Sabrosura’, a tech-house scorcher. Functional, fantastic, effective & sure to work any dance floor. Loopy juice follow suit with ‘Namaste Rio’, collaborating with Hamza for and delivering a dubby, daytime destroyer. Minimal, powerful & maybe rowdy too, expect to find this one being dropped at a club near you. As we near the end of the Banjara Spain & South America series, ‘Gitano’ once again helps us draw an aural picture, with effusive vocals & beautiful melodies. 

‘Sky Song’, the final offering in this installment is an ode to the beautiful culture that has graced the world with its musical culture for centuries and is the perfect end to this series.
