Tokyo-based DJ, producer and sound artist Yuu Udagawa inaugurates the freshly launched Cyphon Recordings with her debut EP, ‘Forever’. Growing up on a cocktail of everything from rock, hip-hop and Latin jazz to techno and house, Yuu’s immersive musical output draws inspiration from this diverse pool of influences to create “uplifting and healing” music for the mind and body. There’s an elegance and sophistication to her productions, which stems from her desire to make music guided by the Golden Mean philosophy of finding a middle ground between two extremes: excess and deficiency.

Active as a DJ since the millennium, which saw her playing at clubs, festivals and fashion shows across the country, she soon turned her attention to music production and has since self-released a handful of singles and contributed audio commissions for Sony Playstation3, museums, theatres and apparel brands. Yuu’s meditative pallet of sounds instantly grabbed Cyphon’s third ear which led to the tracks that make up ‘Forever’: a collection of analog slo-mo electronica and leftfield minimal house that strike a perfect balance between warmth and depth.

The release opens with the titular track: a deep, emotive electro cut punctuated by a twinkling synthline and blissful vocals. ‘Mojito’ continues the EP’s voyage into the deep, matching softly spoken word with jazz-tinged chords and meandering melodies, before ’Hug Close’ strips things back, guided by a crunchy minimal groove, warm, resolute keys and reflective synths.

The B-Side steers things on a soulful course. The dark, enveloping atmosphere of ‘Illuminated Night’ is lifted by bright synth stabs and harmonic R&B-flavoured vocals. These influences continue on closer ‘Stay With Us’. Slowing down the pace, the track is a wash of shimmering funk-inspired chords and shuffling rhythms, laced once again with effortless, soaring vocal tones.

Palm Skin Productions – AKA versatile musician, producer, and DJ Simon Richmond (whose CV includes Mo’ Wax, Depeche Mode, REM, Pulp, Neneh Cherry, and The Bays) – announces new four-track EP titled Trickle Up’, a revolutionary call to arms against trickle-down economics.

EP opener and lead-single “Trickle Up” is an acid-tinged, dancefloor-stomper; “Stealing The Sunset” melds live electronic sounds with a low-slung bass guitar (played with a 2 pence piece for added grit); “Back To Detroit” enacts on Simon’s cut-up fidget sound blueprint while paying homage to the motor city, and lastly “Du(m)b Witness” pulsates with a brash UK swagger. Talking about the meaning of the EP, Simon explains:

 “Trickle Up to me is all about resisting the many forces that try to drag us down in different ways. The way the UK has been governed for well over a decade has been characterised by a downward trajectory as the extreme acquisition of wealth is increasingly rewarded at the expense of everyone else’s well-being”

“We are being dragged down by low expectations of our governments, happiness, stability, social and cultural support. Trickle Down Economics is the cruel joke of a theory that if enough wealthy people are made wealthier, mostly through tax cuts and the withdrawal of social support, then a proportion of their excessive riches somehow filters down to the rest of society.” 

Simon adds a call to action, against the grim reality: “We are all here at the bottom looking up waiting for drips. I think it’s time to instigate a Trickle Up system, whereby the people rise up and slowly start to affect change. We don’t get change by waiting for it to come down to us. It’s not just about the stark reality of money, it’s also about all of life - Trickle Up is a celebration, a paying forward, a reminder that we can help each other elevate.”

‘Trickle Up EP’ is the latest follow-up to Palm Skin Productions’ album ‘Other Times’, an instrumental beat-tape built around a collection of scatter-burst ideas that flow as a unified body of work. Praised by the likes of Gilles Peterson (WWFM), Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music) and Andrew Jervis (Bandcamp Weekly), the record was inspired by Simon's daily obsession with sea-swimming. ‘Other Times’ was preceded by the powerfully emotive “The Sword Will Die”– an eleven-minute immersion that melds pastoral piano, mid-tempo drums, pulsing organic techno influences and bucolic ambient texture - Simon’s debut release on Tru Thoughts.
