In 2014 an Arabic oud player George Kandalaft and Jewish/Russian violinist Alexey Kochetkov find themself sharing the same apartment in Berlin. Both of them came to Berlin to fulfill their dream of living in a free society and having a freedom to make art. As a response to the violence escalation between Israel and Gaza they decided to create this recording and show that it's better to cooperate than arguing, create together than destroy and instead of hating each other to find a way to love.

Longa Shachnaz

As a band we are happy to play Arabic-Oriental music as we see it. Our dream is to show what happens when oriental music meets Berlin. Here is our version for "Alf Layla wa Layla" from the ever great Oum Kalthoum and we hope you like it.

Taverna Berlin

Berlin Oriental Quartet is an acoustic coloboration of four musicians of Berlin Oriental Group as well as a minimalistic version of the band. The piece "Sahara" was composed by the violinist A.Kochetkov.

Sahara by Berlin Oriental Quartet

One of the most famous Longas in the world of Arabic-oriental music is the Longa from the composer Riad Sumbati. Berlin Oriental Quartet decided to upgrade it with some samba rhythms and that's why now it's called Longa Sambati. 
The recording is from the live concert at the Werkstatt der Kulturen Berlin.

Berlin Oriental Quartet - Ave Maria

Berlin Oriental Group was created in a time of great mix of nations at the crossroad of east and west. Like a salt-sprinkling chef they throw an Arabic-oriental rhythms and melodies, distorted guitars and electronic sounds into the melting pot and boiling it on a high fire of Berliner party spirit. The source of their inspiration comes from Mediterranean, Arabic and Balkan music as well as Funk, Rock, and Electro. They obey the principals of the Middle-Eastern hospitality and happily open the door to an artistic collaboration, so you will always see an exciting guest singers, belly-dancers and instrumentalists joining them on stage. The outcome of this multicultural mix is a rallying call for the dance floor and an ultimate answer to the question – what happens when oriental music meets Berlin.
