Best known for creating the iconic sound of Tainted Love, Dave helped shape the sound of the 80s and inspired generations of musicians. From his early days in Leeds with Marc Almond to his final work on Soft Cell’s new album, this is a farewell to a true pioneer of synth pop. R.I.P. Dave Ball — thank you for the music.

Tainted Love Forever (80s New Wave Tribute)

‘##1 Versions’ follows Num.Lock’s debut release attempting to explore the limits of the potential to recycle and re-contextualise sounds. 

The reinterpretations included here were produced across early 2016, with each contributor given stems for their chosen track at varying stages in its production (before the original versions were complete). ‘##1 Versions’ features a diverse array of styles, from the crescendo-ing glitch of George McVicar’s ‘gUZU’ to Object Blue’s captivating vocal reduction of ‘F45w’. 

The release also features two notably more beatific experiments, West Norwood Cassette Library harking back to early Surgeon releases with a booming recast of ‘AYac’, and Airsilk manipulating ‘uSXY’ into a taut slab of mangled 4/4.

Tom Harris, aka Hidden Spheres, first made his mark on the underground with his release ‘The Bloos’, on the legendary Detroit label Moods & Grooves. Continuing to deliver his incredible original studio productions on UK Labels Distant Hawaii, Lobster Theremin and Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section imprint.

Taking a break from his frequent NTS radio shows and his own record label ‘Fruit Merchant’, he now offers up a four track EP of collaborations with musicians from across the globe. Crafting a record that fuses influences from jungle to acid and afro-beat and many other stops along the way.

‘Breathing Deep’ lands on the A1, a collaboration with John Swift that brings a plethora of worldly percussion instruments, from tuned marimbas to live drum kit and live grooving conga rhythms. Pitched vocals and bright horn stabs contrast the meandering synth leads that run through this acidic blend of organic and synthetic sounds.

‘Tiamo’ features Contours for this trippy, off-kilter groove. Swelling synth chords and hypnotising triplet feels from the palate of live percussion rhythms. ‘Ruhani’ ft. Kubilay Yiğit, is teeming with afro-beat references. The live drums nod to Tony Allen’s genre defining playing while a wandering acid line leads the track through an exploration of underwater electro vs organic African drumming.

'Believe' ft. Theo Erskin closes the EP with skippy hip-hop influenced MPC style drum programming. Shuffling across with syncopated kicks, live saxophone improv and wobbling electric piano chords, this miniature jazz exploration proves Hidden Spheres is more than just a club producer.

Aurum Miles, Poulper - Witch Hunters (Original Mix)

Mystical track with a groovie bass and rhythm sections combined with a folk vocals of the Lithuanian virgin girls. A Terminator sent from the future to confuse simple-minded people to hunt supernatural creatures that supposedly exist at the time.  This comment is directed to the main vocal line of the track - a male terminator disguised as one of the Salem residents.

Hypnotecho’O is Pho Bho’s second release made and arranged by Matteo Coffetti, the label’s co-founder along with Federico Spini.

The record’s distinctive feature is its original fusion between ethnic samples beaten by violent kicks and sharp snares from the rawest techno. What it generates it’s a unique rhythm-flow ideal for the dancefloor.

The collaboration with Filippo Zenna is the result of the two artist’s anxieties and fears over a past that is no longer here and a tomorrow that strives to come.
