“Numerous Voices” is an adaptation of Morton Feldman's Three Voices, a 1982 composition originally written by Feldman in homage to his friends Philip Guston and Frank O’Hara and drawing its textual materials from O’Hara’s 1957 poem "Wind." In her adaptation, Negar Soleymanifar incorporates field recordings from Tehran, captured during the summer of 2024, adding a personal and contemporary dimension to Feldman’s original work. This version also features two cellists, Noa Koffman and Calla Palezny, who will perform alongside the field recordings, enhancing the overall texture of the performance while serving as the needle that connects the two different worlds: the voices and the sounds of Tehran.

Feldman describes Three Voices as an “exchange of the live voice with the dead ones.” The piece features a live singer interacting with two pre-recorded vocal tracks, creating a dialogue between the present and the seemingly “dead” voices of the past. This interaction evokes a meditative quality, as the live voice weaves through layers of time and memory.

For Negar, this performance represents a personal exploration of her relationship with the sounds of Tehran. The field recordings and samples are designed based on the structure of Three Voices, serving as a connection to her past and capturing elements of the city that she has experienced throughout her life but can no longer hear in the same way engaging with the idea of loss and memory and change through sounds as while the cellists become the needle that connected the two worlds.

“Those Days” is written for two voices and organ, with a text based on the poem of the same name, “Those Days” by the Iranian poet Forough Farrokhzad. (I highly recommend reading the entire poem—it’s incredibly rich and beautiful.) While composing this piece, I was deeply inspired by Zoroastrian music, a sound world that has stayed with me since 2021 when I visited the Zoroastrian Fire Temple in Yazd.
