This just being happy not listening to the music but to listen to yourself with the music: That's what Bertil Mark creates. Too Distant is the desire to be close and yet shows us: we are alone together. PNN has decided at a time when a lot is breaking down - others are waiting for the crisis to end - to continue where it was lost some time ago - especially in this uncertain time to start again with the simple claim: "What does the world cost? - lets go!" Even when there are no raves, parties or festivals - listen to the music and live the dream. You are not alone!

Bertil Mark is no stranger to Germany's music scene - not least as a producer of Popnoname, Urlaub in Polen, Von Spar or German pop greats like Clueso or Thomas D - on whose former horse farm "M.A.R.S." he resides and has built an unlikely music studio. As a show & light designer he works with The Notwist, FM Einheit, Jan Delay, Lindemann etc together, to name just a few stars of German pop culture.

But Bertil is also what is called an apparition. When he walks through the streets, people stop and watch him. Not just because of his great looks - no - there is something about him that makes him unique. What many know about themselves, but very few manage to live out. And yes - Parago Seiler put it this way: "[...] he is always one step ahead of himself, uncompromising in artistic matters and probably what you would call a real artist [...]"

On Too Distant, the debut on PNN, he does what he promises. Two incredible tracks that make you dance and dream with remixes by Popnoname and Julian Stetter, who will then release his first full-length album on PNN. All of this digitally and on vinyl - at a time when there is no such thing as giving up. We want the world, and we want it now.

Belgrade-born and Dusseldorf-based, https://soundcloud.com/vladimir is a singular DJ with no distinctive sound. Renowned for consistently pushing and exploring the boundaries of DJing, he enjoys finding unusual “frequencies, silence, and gaps” by playing records at the wrong speed, most influentially - giving 90’s trance a dark and EBM-influenced feel by slowing them down. Sharing music to provoke an emotive reaction, Ivkovic reaches for genres not usually heard on the dancefloor: “If you can make someone cry, maybe by accident, with a selection of music, it's a beautiful thing.”

Having finessed his skills at the world-famous Salon Des Amateurs alongside Lena Wilikens and Jan Schulte, Ivkovic now also runs Offen Music, a label specialised in authentic subjectivism.

This expansive offering for our series leans more towards a soundtrack than a club mix; a hypnotic meander through sound-scapes, samples and the consistently creative selections we've all come to embrace with Vladimir.

Here’s the recording of my Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, which I recorded at the start of 2020 and was broadcast in June. Feeling like I’d been given some big shoes to fill, I spent a couple of months planning a rambunctious, high-energy party mix that would also still be pretty ambitious in the range of styles and tempos it would cover, finally finishing it just as the first lockdowns were kicking in. Obviously, by the time it was eventually broadcast it felt a little out of step with the times. But listening back to it I still feel like it’s one of my better studio mixes, and with the holidays (and a vaccine) around the corner maybe its energy will even feel newly appropriate. So in case you missed the official broadcast – or wanted a download – here it is.
