From the beginnings 17 years ago our goal was to bring East-European and Balkan music to the world's dance floor and to create a virtual-folklore of the region, with no political or cultural borders. We have been making music to dance to and to enjoy, taking melodies, songs, rhythms from the traditional music of our homeland and the neighboring countries, mixing them with numerous other musical elements. There was nothing to compare the result with. It was Besh o droM’s new “tradition”. All our activities encouraged other groups and musicians to treat the folk music of Eastern Europe and the Balkans as a source of new musical expression. Just the way it is done in other popular folk-based genres like Latin music, Blues or Reggae. Now when you hear East-European and Balkans melodies at festivals, in clubs and discos all over the world we are happy to be a small part of the process that helped the culture of the region spread all over the world.
There has been a revolution in the living folk music of the Balkans and Eastern Europe in the last decade. Video sharing sites have helped top musicians to exchange ideas, and electronic instruments are widely used for additional expression and comfort. Some people say these things ‘spoil’ original folklore, but anyone can hear that the entire traditional heritage is alive and had been brought to a new level of articulation. Just like not very long ago when western instruments like the accordion, violin, clarinet, saxophone or trumpet were introduced to the folk music of the region. The sound of the EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) brings alive this new sound of the Balkans, which is fresh and deeply traditional at the same time. The drum set, the electric and the bass guitar carry the sound of rock and punk music. The cimbalom, accordion and clarinet give East-European flavors, while the derbuka and the saxophones add Balkans traditions to our repertoire.

Besh o droM was formed in Budapest 1999. The name in the lovari (gipsy) dialect literally means "ride the road", but it’s real meaning is “go find your own way” . Besh o droM draws it’s musical basis form Transylvanian, Serbian, Macedonian, Romanian, Hungarian, Gypsy, Jewish, Afghan, Egyptian, Libanese, Armenian, Bulgarian, and Greek tunes presenting folk and electronic instruments simultaneously. The different types of music from nations which nowadays do not necessarily communicate well with each other appear together in peace and harmony.
