Inspired by the Luc Besson film of the same name, and written at a time when its writer was considering future study paths. Her fascination with space and sci-fi somehow made her cry at one particular point where Scarlett Johansson is looking at the constellations, making Katie realise how much she loved astrophysics. The song itself is a bitter-sweet, sweeping piece of cinematic pop glory. Anchored by the beautiful and lifting string arrangement of Pete Harvey of King Creosote/Modern Studies fame, the track eases into a lament of regret with a biting and acerbic commentary about a missed love, yet completes itself with a self-affirming message of positivity. This will raise you up, throw you about a bit then leave you with a contented feeling of warmth with that wonderful, assured vocal that Best Girl Athlete has become known for and would not be out of place on the albums of Lana Del Rey and The XX.

The brutal reality of knowing you are losing a loved one and somehow managing to articulate it in such a beautifully and tender manner is genuinely and truly touching. The ethereal and other-worldly mood brought to the track echoes the emotions that one can only imagine were felt by its writer. Katie delivers the track in such a heartfelt and meaningful manner, it becomes difficult to separate the imagined experience from what is passing through your ears. Yes, it can be difficult to listen to, but it also reaffirms that there are some beautiful souls out there who can touch others in so many ways.

Following the success of debut, Carve Every Word, in 2015, Katie Buchan - aka Best Girl Athlete – returns with new album - the self-titled Best Girl Athlete due for release on 02/10/17 via Fitlike Records.

Written prior to reaching the age of eighteen alongside her musician father, Charley, here Katie establishes herself as a mature singer-songwriter with a creative vision that not only surpasses expectations but confirms the young musician as a prominent and original talent with a host of admirers including Richard Hawley and Simone Felice. 

A collection of songs that each tells a story and makes a connection to the individual, Best Girl Athlete brings together an eclectic range of influences, bridging pop with elements of folk, electronic and Americana whilst drawing on themes of melancholia, abandonment and fear but with a message of resilience and hope for the future, rendering it refreshingly difficult to pigeonhole into just one genre. From the Mark Ronson-esque horns of ‘In Your Head’, the dark, swaying Americana of Vetiver on ‘Sometimes’, the fusion of soulful melodies and Katie’s assured vocal juxtaposed with the fast-paced rap of Jack Hughes on ‘Baby Come Home’, to the up-tempo, electronic, anti-establishment themed ‘In The Morning’, and the soaring and uplifting strings of single ‘Lucy’ offering cinematic pop reminiscent of Lana Del Rey, each track offers something different from the last. 

Best Girl Athlete has been born out of the non-conventional manner in which many people now consume music; collecting individual offerings, rather than whole albums. Consequently each song here stands alone as a single offering with lyrically intriguing, musically accomplished depth that will draw on audiences from across the board. 

By the age of sixteen years, Katie Buchan had already toured the U.S and Europe and released an album that was nominated for a Scottish Alternative Music Award. Carve Every Word was named the second best Scottish album of 2015 by Ravechild and received acclaim from the likes of The Line of Best Fit, Clash Magazine, Folk Radio, Artrocker, The Sunday Herald and BBC Radio Scotland’s Vic Galloway and Roddy Hart. One can only imagine what the future will bring for this young artist, but it looks certain that this innovative new album is sure to propel her even further forward.
