10:50 - I hate how dumbed-down this movie is.  If you pay attention to the subtext, the aliens are probably a first-contact expedition that was already en-route decades before the laser message was sent.  Earth's been "leaking" radio broadcasts into space since the 1920s.  That's more than enough time.  Then there's the fact that the aliens OBSERVE THE GENEVA CONVENTIONS!  Unfortunately, their FTL communication ship is destroyed by that satelite and that makes establishing communication with their homeworld THE top priority even above a peaceful first contact.
