Other Joe’s ‘Jealousy Tulip’ arrives in stasis - as if suspended in mid-air. No longer rising but not yet falling.

After contributing a piece to our Stay In Bed Vol. II compilation we proudly present the latest EP from the .jpeg Artefacts label head, a hazy five tracker built on swirling loops, murky textures and playful motifs.   Joe’s EP is comprised of loops made in a single day and ruminated over long walks. Large project files and overloaded effect racks caused the renders of each file to take on a slightly different flavour each time they were exported. We’ve dubbed this precarious workflow “CPU Jazz”.

Within these uneasy and at times disconcerting sonic textures there are hopeful melodies and rhythms that cut through the fog, suggesting an idyllic spring that is just out of reach. Let your ear hold onto these moments and use them as a key to open you up to the meditative garden of the Jealousy Tulip.

"The mix is kind of a sequel to this (https://soundcloud.app.goo.gl/EvJv7M2E5Gt2KA878) which I made last year. But that one was more a reflection of solitude and longing, and this one is dedicated to friendship and coming home... I wanted it to feel like a soundtrack, with each song a new scene. The opening and closing tracks are from the yo la tengo s/t to Kelly Reichardt’s beautiful buddy / road movie Old Joy. They’re called “leaving home” and “driving home.” The mix is also inspired by her films as portraits of companionship. I also included music from some of my favourites, old and new, ylt, penguin cafe orchestra, the garbage & the flowers, and flowchart."

The first mixtape released on Best Effort is by Naarm (Melbourne) based DJ/ writer, Sophie McAlister. A Sooky La La at heart, this mix is comprised of Sophie’s most sentimental songs which seem to exude the palpable feeling of Saudade, a Portuguese word that can be described as ‘a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy.’ The tracks weave through 110 minutes of unrequited love and melancholic sounds that range from MPB, Psych, Folk, Middle Eastern Jazz and Soul, evoking a deep sense of nostalgia and longing.

Crafted with heartbreak from reel to reel, these feelings on tap(e) hope to offer tender respite to the listener’s jaunt down memory lane. These field recordings listen to the sound of unceded and sacred land. I pay my respects to the Dharug people, the Gundungurra people, the Gunaikurnai people, the Boon Wurrung people, the Wurundjeri people, the Djab Wurrung and the Jardwardjali people as the Traditional Custodians of these lands, seas, skies, ecosystems, and waterways which I have been so honoured to bear witness to, listen to, and pass through.

The Lilac Island in Space is inhabitable only by auditory imagination. An ecosystem shrouded in nostalgia, memory, and all shades of purple. The original recordings from this space were destroyed in an unprecedented collision between microchip and wooden-floorboard. Now existing only as an artifact in my mind, I aim to retrace my footsteps and return to a place of past, present, and future. I hope you make your own trail to follow on this island, and find your own nook to explore.

Perhaps I’ll see you, perhaps I won’t.
