Absorb presents the debut EP by 'dummy tree', the interlocked, ambient strong of Melbourne's Jim Sellars (Yunzero), Jordan Obarzanek (Body Clock, OBA, Cloud Ice 9), and Joseph Buchan (Other Joe).

Three improvisational live cuts form the super-group’s first release, all pinched from their dovetailed performance at the ABSORBED festival in 2024. It was 4:30pm, they were backlit by the afternoon sun. Through these longform recordings, each member of dummy tree can be heard intimately, testing dynamics in turn and introducing surprising amounts of drama. There are guitars, both acoustic and electric, competing with synthesisers and woodwind instruments that build from a murmur into whole walls of sound. The drowsy atmospherics are akin to early Seefeel or Windy & Carl, although careful listeners will also pick up crumbs that trace back to the extensive catalogue of works made by Sellars, Obarzanek and Buchan individually.

You'll find the music of dummy tree to be more disarming than any of the aforementioned, a special project that is worth celebrating in its infancy, and to watch out for while it grows.

"I’ve been friends with Joe since we were kids. He is a profound silence filler," writes freelance writer Emile Frankel of his friend Other Joe (aka @josephbuchan) in our upcoming feature article.

'Flawless' is Joe's latest record, regularly toying with the space between ambience, very comfortably proving the artist's ability to leave room for the listener to hear their own breath. 

'Deepblue', co-produced with fellow etherealist @ronan-music, is the penultimate track on Joe’s new record, ‘Flawless’. 

A touching, soft, and yet calmly loud dance. Crunchy, uncompressed drums and ever twinkling pads twist around the echo of an Amen break. NY’s Ronan and Naarm’s Joe link up in the haze to produce something unique. 

'Deepblue' is a taste of everything available on Other Joe’s latest record, becoming available and possible from the inimitable @besteffort. 

'Flawless' is available as a limited run of 150 vinyl via Best Effort’s Bandcamp, and via all streaming platforms on Sunday, June 1.

"There’s always another Joe. Nobody knows just one. There’s always a couple Joes in the orbit. This one was born in Carlton, worked at an ice-cream store in high school, had their first kiss in St. Kilda, last kiss on Lygon St, watches TV in the shower, etc. etc. This one also runs a record label called .jpeg Artefacts, put out an album called Alien Haze, is an audio engineer, does a radio show, snores occasionally, etc. etc.

I feel like I do a trailmix every day. Going out for a walk, putting on tracks. You know the deal. This particular walk we’re going on today is a bit introspective. Feeling sorry for myself is one of my favourite pastimes. If you’re lovesick, downtrodden, feeling dark, even just a smidge devo, this one goes out to you."

Other Joe’s ‘Jealousy Tulip’ arrives in stasis - as if suspended in mid-air. No longer rising but not yet falling.

After contributing a piece to our Stay In Bed Vol. II compilation we proudly present the latest EP from the .jpeg Artefacts label head, a hazy five tracker built on swirling loops, murky textures and playful motifs.   Joe’s EP is comprised of loops made in a single day and ruminated over long walks. Large project files and overloaded effect racks caused the renders of each file to take on a slightly different flavour each time they were exported. We’ve dubbed this precarious workflow “CPU Jazz”.

Within these uneasy and at times disconcerting sonic textures there are hopeful melodies and rhythms that cut through the fog, suggesting an idyllic spring that is just out of reach. Let your ear hold onto these moments and use them as a key to open you up to the meditative garden of the Jealousy Tulip.

This album is essentially an exploration of the relationships between the sub-atomic, the body, and the atmosphere. It has been coming into fruition over the past year as a I moved to Montreal, in many spaces where I found refuge during this transition: places I was cat sitting, my bed, a piano in a pink room, a jam space that I lived in, my new pray-mantis green home, and here as I undergo radium treatment in Jachymov, Czech Republic. As a woman living with several severe auto-immune diseases, I turn to sound when I am unable to move to bring me back into my body with slow gentle movement and acceptance. This album is a call for slowness in a time where things move much too fast.

Vera Dvale's debut solo album on own imprint is funneling in composition and sonics. Introducing and rounding off with field recordings, from East Norway's countryside and the Pacific coast of Chile, it's in the same manner as 70's psychoacoustic recordings creating "sonic silence" if played at right volume. Title track is an exceeding travel of overtones and presence played on the church organ of Sørfinnset Chapel in North of Norway, feverish and beautiful. The bass rich and synthetically warm "Dove Organ" is outernationally spacious and time consuming, with recordings of ancient melting ice from Spitsbergen. As made for, and by, time & sound. Our latest mix, recorded by Kilian, steers away from the label's heavier, club orientated sounds to deliver an hour of ambient and experimental sonics, OK SPIRIT style.
