I wrote this track after being inspired by the film Amadeus, which spoke to me musically and on a spiritual level.  Classical structures and melodies, but with dark undertones and lyrics.  The song is produced by Ryan Olcott for Pytch Records and will be released on my album coming out later this year.

Over the course of several months last summer, Beth Ann McDowell made a conscious decision to return to her roots in complex, rich lyrics, and giving more depth to her songwriting as she began to work on her album, “The Sim Is Real.”  The single is produced by R. Walt Vincent who has worked with some of indie’s greatest: Liz Phair, Pete Yorn, and Scarlett Johansson to name a few.  In tune with that came the natural gravitation toward recording an album in an organic way, with session musicians in a recording that captured the spirit of the moment all at once. Her first single off of the album, “Killers Of The Early Morning”, captures the sort of eerie dream-like vibe that permeates through the entire record.  With unquestionably dark lyrics, the song recollects the common experience most of us have lived: giving all that we have to give, and it is still not enough.

As Beth Ann sat down with her producer, R. Walt Vincent, at a tiny pizzeria, she realized their shared love for darkness mixed with light allowed them the space to create a track that stands on its own. With her first ever collection of songs produced by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, “Alis” positively describes a story that Vernon was a part while the two were in college, though the details remain a mystery.

“Where The Calm Things Are” was written about a love story gone wrong, but the dark imagery is countered with McDowell’s delicate vocals and whimsy. The track is produced by R. Walt Vincent (Scarlett Johansson, Liz Phair) who liked the idea of this dark story being told with a wink and a smile.
