After blasting onto the scene in 2010 on the biggest dancehall tune of the year, “Clarks,” Portmore's Popcaan has since proved himself as one of the most talented up-and-coming vocalists in the genre. Coming up as Vybz Kartel's protégé, this year the 23 year old has lent his distinctive voice to an arsenal of bashment hits, from ghetto laments to party smashers. Most recently, this past fall Popcaan was the first dancehall artist since Sean Paul to have his track playlisted on the BBC and big things are set to follow for the “Raving King.”  
 
2012 sees Popskull team up with Dre Skull for a series of Mixpak releases, the first being the single “Get Gyal Easy.” Dre Skull's shaking bass crescendos and minor key string stabs provide the backbone for an emotional gallis anthem, a slow-burning and euphoric bashment tune that showcases Popcaan's versatile singjay style.  BBC 1xtra has tapped the single to feature in their Hot 20 of 2012 special airing on January 1st and will follow by keeping the track on their playlist – a strong start for 2012. 
 
This is Mixpak keeping its bond with Jamaica as tight as ever.  


Popcaan - Get Gyal Easy (prod. Dre Skull) preview

Nearly a year after producing Vybz Kartel’s “Kingston Story” and fresh from delivering Popcaan’s “Get Gyal Easy,” Dre Skull returns with a brand new riddim, featuring four original vocals from some of the biggest Caribbean artists. 

The Loudspeaker Riddim, which is not just a name but also a serving suggestion, is a powerful and emotive track, with lingering echoes that 
build and fold over each other until the dancehall bassline kicks in and a minimal synth-stab leaves the track wide open for the vocalist to shine. King of the Dancehall, Beenie Man, sets the riddim alight with his fast- flowing ode to the female form on “Hot Like Fire,” while Mixpak family member Natalie Storm delivers a classic braggadocios take on “Rock The Runway.” Normally found voicing the upper echelons of bpm, Soca Monarch Machel Montano makes a rare appearance on a dancehall riddim, keeping his energy intact for an expressive tune dedicated to winery – “Go Down.” Popcaan rounds off the release with 'The System', an epic, conscious track that sees the young deejay describe the trials and struggles of ghetto youth in the face of the system. 

The Loudspeaker Riddim is not only a testament to the versatility of the artists featured, but to dancehall itself, a proud addition to the ever-growing Mixpak dancehall catalogue.

Dre Skull - Loudspeaker Riddim

Part of a trilogy of Dre Skull releases in Summer 2012 (with Loudspeaker Riddim 
preceding and Kingston Story: Deluxe Edition to follow), the Kling Klang Riddim presents five new dancehall tracks, two new additions to the Mixpak artist family and a million vibes.  
 
Though recorded in Kingston, Jamaica earlier this year, Kling Klang is named after Kraftwerk's legendary German studio and takes some inspiration from their repertoire: Dre Skull's riddim revs up to the sound of an engine, then breaks into a minimal soundscape powered by cymbals, resonating bass and lasers that waver on computer game aesthetics before accelerating into the chorus.  
 
For his second voicing on a Mixpak riddim, Beenie Man takes a trip in his time machine and delivers “Super Model,” offering a 90s style delivery with throwback content to match: hailing the coca cola bottle shape. Portmore's Deva Bratt brings it “Hot And Ready,” with his fast-flowing auto-tuned falsetto that impressively barely breaks for a breath.  With “So We Do It,” Popcaan yet again picks another style from his wide array, going in for a relaxed storytelling verse that would make Slick Rick proud and a singjay chorus-line to remind you how he do it.  Ward 21 deejay and producer Suku brings the deep vibrations of a bass voice on “Mad Sumaddy,” a sonic and lyrical warning against his powerful tunes that drop like bombs. On the same tip, Tifa brings her boasy style as a “Champion Bubbler,” laying claim to more winds than a country road and a repertoire of dances ranging from the 6.30 to Tick It Like A Clock. 
  
This is Mixpak's trans-continental express; always adding artists to the journey and keeping the strange ride rolling smoothly. Jump on it.
