There is nothing contrived about the kind of playing that comes jolting out of Booker Ervin’s tenor saxophone and the great quality of soul reflected on the six tracks of “The Book Cooks.” The album is introduced by George Tucker’s bass on The Blue Book followed by Tommy Flanagan, Booker Ervin, Tommy Turrentine, and Zoot Sims in that order. Next, Ervin’s opening blues are propelled beautifully on Git It followed by the Mingus’ inspired Little Jane. Side B kicks off with a strong performance from Booker and Zoot on The Book Cooks followed by Ervin’s composition Largo and ending with a stellar performance of Poor Butterfly.

Hailing from the Detroit Jazz scene, trumpeter Donald Byrd &  baritonist Pepper Adams join forces with guitarist Kenny Burrell, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Louis Hayes (aka “Hey” Lewis) to form the all-star sextet heard on Motor City Scene (also released as Stardust). The album opens with Stardust, or “music to get lost in” as described by All About Jazz. Adams takes the lead on Philson followed by Chambers and Hayes up-tempo version of Trio. Libeccio reflects a contrast of talent from the entire sextet, ending on a high note with their hard- swinging rendition of Bitty Ditty.
