"The original field recording I choose inspired me a lot in this lockdown time, and made me think about some vital and similar trips I experienced in South America in 2016. Also, the entire project reminds me my last travels in Europe on several regional trains I took before the pandemic restrictions in 2020. With all this in mind I wanted to create an imaginative travelouge for 2021 by remixing different geographies/experiences to give a sense of unpredictability which every significant journey brings to our lives. 

"The richness and diversity of each clip are combined together - cleaned and manipulated, in motion and more stationary, quiet and loud, at southern and northern hemispheres - mostly on a space-time continuum mood. To remember how easy was traveling and how important is the way we discover spaces/places and people far from our habits. To keep in mind that moving is a crucial human need/right and to imagine a freer future way of traveling with a new idea of mobility, slower and more train-based than before, possibly.

"The composition includes snippets of a manipulated version of the original recording, with sonic portions of an ecological jungle train I recorded at the boundaries between Argentina, Paraguay and Brazil, and a couple of field recordings gathered from two important train stations in France and Swiss.

Bon Voyage

Mapping a Space from the Self to the Other 

It is an audio map of a journey beginning at the dawn of a small town in central east of Italy, going down to the Capital, and coming back at the dawn of the day after. Narrative is imaginary and not always chronological even though is entirely based on field recordings taken from a specific portion of Italy tied up geographically and historically. 

I wake up and I pass through an awakening local market, I have breakfast in a silent café in the town center and a vegetarian lunch in a busy restaurant by the sea. Through walking and listening to the sounds and noises around me I record a conversation in a quiet street, meanwhile a bulding site resonates out of a courtyard. I also pass through a Catholic infant school and then I take a fast train to the city where I spoke with an homeless from the Balkans at the entrance of a central supermarket. Then I walk on the outskirts of the city where a big process of social diversity is on, and I take a sound recording along the footpath I inhabit for a while.

I get back home on a slow and local 'litturina' train in which I share the convoy with a group of migrant workers from Nigeria who speak vividly in their own language. The small  but agile train lifts up the mountains and drop down to the hilly countryside where the journey ends, quite and clear.

Ideazione, Creazione, Voci, Partiture, Flauti, Microfoni, Elettroniche: Elisabetta Senesi, Ilaria Palloni

Il progetto, inedito e attualmente in fase di sviluppo, nasce da una volontà di riflettere sul valore universale e personale del proprio dialetto nativo, nonché della radice da cui esso proviene, fatta di legami fisici e simbolici. Siamo partite inizialmente dal libro tradotto in vernacolo maceratese 'Lu Pringipittu' (Il Piccolo Principe), per creare un nuovo processo, intimo e importante, di ascolto fonetico dei luoghi e dei ricordi. Successivamente, abbiamo decostruito e astratto le parole dialettali dalla loro funzione lineare primaria, traslandole in un flusso acustico legato alla sfera emotiva, terrena e ultraterrena della voce e del respiro. Questo breve pezzo iniziale dell'intero progetto in cui diversi strati sonori dialogano e confliggono tra loro, è quindi aperto a molteplici interpretazioni linguistiche e auditive in un contesto fortemente metanarrativo e transdisciplinare.

The audio piece is part of a project I led with photography/fine arts students in the outskirts of Florence exploring the relationship between pre-recorded sound, public space and still image. My field recording composition aims to question acoustically this urban public environment of Italy in order to build, perhaps, a visual narrative upon it.

EXTRAVAGANZA SUR (10 MIN)

This piece is a free exploration of different sonic gardening zones, both public and private, I experienced in Argentina in December-January 2015-2016 when summer is up and people love having parrillas in their patios, sneaking into private swimming pools and chatting all night long outdoor in the urban environment.

So many spaces and places have been crossed: from friendly enclosed BBQs areas within the city of Buenos Aires to wide open sub-tropical zones at the boundary with Brazil and Paraguay, alongside the city river in search of subtle and hilarious electrical fauna's utterance.

Composition is built upon a wider idea of relational geographies, intuitive soundscaping and active listening.

It was selected at the radio art festival 'Datscha Radio - A Garden In the Air' happened in Potsdam/Berlin in late August 2017, and broadcasted through the web.

ELISABETTA SENESI 2017

EL JARDÌN EXPANDIDO - IN & OUT BUENOS AIRES

The piece is a brief reimagination of this volcanic island where locals inhabit the space in a cheerful and pleasant manner, as the title evokes, despite the presence of a big and upredictable voice which is over there and fits into an ordinary night at the Stromboli harbour.

VABBUÒ STROMBOLI

The piece is composed by snippets of the original recording which are chopped, slightly manipulated and reassembled with a few static tones in a way that the cruise flows between real and unreal. I was inspired by a little human voice coming out of the loudspeaker swept by the abstract sounds/noises of these huge cruising waves around Governor's Island."

SWEEPING MANHATTAN

The piece is a binaural composition focused on a sonic interpretation of being at home in these complex present times, and the possibility to escape from all that. So many domestic and private spaces/places are combined together in order to narrate an emotional state of suspension, and perturbation.

STILL

The piece is focused on the theme of competition and tradition combining two different Italian popular sports such as 'bocce' (playing bowls) and 'corsa campestre' (cross-country race). In this work it was important for me to put together an indoor small game and an outdoor collective big event where competitive attitudes and individual mindset are in contrast in therms of body movement and dynamics.

The piece is a brief composition focused on the notions of 'pausing' and 'foreseen' coming from Perast, Montenegro, an historical sea village on the Adriatic coast during a long interruption of electricity due to a big summer fire in 2015.
