BEVAN Show 08 @ Operator Radio (June 2021)

Feels like its been a long time since I've recorded a solely funk, boogie and soul mix so took the opportunity this month to take then Operator show in that direction.

Nothing necessarily 'obscure' in this one just plenty of my long-time favourite tracks, starting out with some soul from the likes of Lee Fields and Bobby Womack. Slowly moving into funk by Allspice, Norman Connors and Carl Weathers. Finally, launching into boogie bonafide bosses like Khemistry, Aurra and Don Blackman!

BEVAN Show 09 - Soul, Funk and Boogie Special @ Operator Radio (July 2021)

Back with vol. 2 following on from 'Sunshine Indoors' which I recorded back in June 2020 at the start of the corona lockdown during the UK summer. 

'Sunshine Outdoors' hits all the genres which epitomise the summer sun for me. Starting out soothingly with reggae, dancehall, lovers rock, street soul and r&b before moving into boogie, kwaito, bubblegum, deep house and also some uptempo zouk.

I really enjoyed putting this series together and playing a lot of tracks I don't play too often in my radio shows, which are usually more house-orientated. Keep an eye out for vol. 3 soon...

Album artwork is taken from and inspired by the Erick Paul And Tuco Bouzi, Dixie Band record which is played towards the end of this mix and the track is called 'Bel Carnival'. It's an incredible piece of synth and horn led Compas from Haiti.

Finally, RIP to all the musicians we lost due to the pandemic including Steve Kekana, one of the leading voices in SA music who's discography is incredibly diverse and inspiring and will always live on through his music.

BEVAN presents Sunshine Outdoors (Vol. 2) (Aug 2021)

Took the short journey from Utrecht to Leiden to visit the family over at Maxi Radio! Once again I had a blast meeting them all and enjoying the wonderful space they have over there. This set is a reflection of that I hope. I opened the schedule so started off nice and soft with some soothing soul before working through plenty of boogie. Slowly bringing in the four to the floor deep and garage house, finally ending with some freestyle and more synth-laden funk.

Bevan - 02 @ Maxi Radio (September 2021)

This was my first two hour show from the container! Had fun starting out with some street soul, hip hop and g-funk in the opening hour before playing some zouk, bubblegum and kwaito. It ends with some garage house and dubs of some of my favourite vocal house tracks from labels like Strictly Rhythm and Emotive. 

Still need to get used to the two hours in the studio and finding those connections between genres as I felt the middle 30 minutes of this one is a bit mismatched.

I was invited down to Hearth in Amsterdam to play some records for 5 hours to soundtrack the Friday night diners. Cannot recommend it enough, great guys who run the place, fantastic food, a nice warm soundsystem and a beautiful DJ booth with a Rane rotary mixer!

Was a lovely chance to play some records I have been wanting to test out and gave me a great chance to listen in full to songs and just let them play out.

Bevan @ Hearth - 5hour Dinner Listening Set (13th May 2022)

Couldn't have asked for a nicer day in Rotterdam last Saturday for Show 16! Opened up the day of broadcasting so started off with soul and funk, mostly records I like to listen to when I am waking up. 

Then went into loads of UK bits I picked up when I was home last weekend from Music and Video Exchange in Greenwich including some reggae and plenty of street soul and r&b. Around the hour mark it moves into boogie and funk and then finally some house records as always, some great finds in there if I don't say so myself...

Really excited to share my opening set for Jeremy at Phonox in London! Tried to set the tone right with some soul/funk 7's before going into more disco and boogie and handing over to him with some house-ier bits.

A new mix at Maxi to toast their lovely new studio at Wibar in Leiden. Been a while since I pulled out a whole stack of disco and boogie records so went for it this time, as it felt right as their wonderful Discotuin event was that evening.

Tied Together - 07 w/ Bevan & Simon Paw @ Operator Radio (Nov 2024)

An edit of mine I have been playing out a lot at the moment! A quick cut and paste edit of this amazing remix by E-Smoove of Cheryl Lynn's Japan only release of 'Don't Wanna Be Mistreated'. 

My fave remix by Eric Miller (E-Smoove) and that's saying something as there's a lot of incredible ones out there, go check his discogs to dive into his sea of fantastic remixes.

The edit is pretty simple, I switched out the intro for some drums which were originally at the end of the track for a cleaner intro to mix and added a short break in the middle using a piano break from the end of the track.

Cheryl Lynn - Don't Wanna Be Mistreated (E-Smoove's Uplifting Club) (Bevan’s cut + paste edit)

Live recording of my warm up set for Jeremy Underground from Phonox! 

It was our third time playing Phonox together and most likely my favourite opening set I’ve played there. A lovely crew and a delightful booth meant I enjoyed every second of this opening and our b2b later in the evening! As always I packed a load of slow jams to open the floor and wanted to ease people into dancing the night away.

Opening Set @ Phonox, London for Jeremy Underground (Jan 2025)

A quick cut, paste and re-EQ edit of this wonderful boogie funk track by Janice Bulluck from her 1987 album 'Don't Start A Fire'. The LP version has a short intro so I re-arranged it and also gave the bass some boost as on the original is lacking a lot of low end. It's a fantastic track with a killer breakdown and build up in the middle, the rest of the album is also worth checking with 3 or 4 more good tracks on there.

Janice Bulluck - I'm Ridin' High On Your Love (Bevan's EQxtended edit)

Pleased to share the recording from my first festival set back in May this year for the lovely guys over at @planetgroovebe in Belgium! <3

I took the reigns for the final 2 hours of the stage so it was a fun chance to go through all the high energy bits I enjoy. You can still expect the usual house and boogie alongside some UK garage, newer house stuff I've been diggin' by the likes of Retromigration and DJ Split and closing out with some uptempo disco!

Bevan Live @ Planet Groove, Belgium (May 2025)

Had the pleasure of playing the opening 3 hours of Wibar in Leiden's sold out 6th Birthday! 

I wanted to work my way up from 110bpm house (think David Morales Def mixes) to peaktime records and it flowed nicely and ended up being one of my most fun sets in a while, there's something special about going from an empty club to it being packed out.

Bevan Live @ Wibar (June 2025)

A special 2 hour show this month, all vinyl and only purchases from the last 2 weeks digging in record shops across the UK! 

I was back home for 2 weeks for a holiday on the South East coast of the UK and arrived back in Amsterdam with a 60+ new buys. This show highlights the diversity and range in record stores across the UK from reggae, dub and street soul to US disco, funk and house! A majority of these were bought in Hastings and St Leonards from Pressing Matters, Wow and Flutter and Courthouse Records - and then a couple from a day in London at Atlantis Records.
