Soundway records present a unique record: a modern, haunting take on Sudanese music heard through the sonic lens of French artist / producer, Débruit and the poetic, ethereal lyrics and melodies of Sudanese-born singer Alsarah.

Aljawal (The Traveller) is a nomadic reflection for the 21st century. Each song reflects a new stop in the journey, with new cities and new people along the way. When Alsarah first heard Débruit's music she sensed and recognised a fellow traveller through the space and geography of his influences, a sense of time and history coupled with a forward-thinking futuristic outlook.

Born in the capital city of Sudan, Khartoum, Alsarah spent the first 8 years of her life here before she relocated to Taez, Yemen with her family to escape the ever-stifling regime in her native country. She abruptly moved to the US in 1994, when a brief civil war broke out in Yemen, and has lived there to this day.  

Xavier Thomas revealed Débruit in 2008 with 2 sold out 12″s for his and Fulgeance’s Parisian “Musique Large” imprint. Three more EPs on Civil Music followed that included his hit 'Nigeria What'. Piquing interest from the likes of XLR8R, Fact Mag, Benji B and Gilles Peterson his debut album ‘From The Horizon’ came out last year. His dazzling live electronics show has taken him around the world, from Russia to New York, Glastonbury to Sonar. 

On Aljawal he managed to capture and play with an analog sound that stretched the boundaries of the Sudanese rhythms and melodies that Alsarah had grown up with. A unique record was imagined and is finally presented here after a 2 year interplay of ideas and interaction between France and Brooklyn: Alsarah’s adopted home.

Darker Than Wax may have established their bedroom/headphones sound with their recent steady flow of diverse releases - but they also thrive on the heavier side of the spectrum. 
Organising gigs and parties comes with running a music label - revered nights such as the Brown Bag Series (with menswear label SIFR), DMZ (with Midnight Shift), 3rd Party (with Velvet Underground / Zouk), and more recently, Beats N Beyond has allowed DTW to showcase its appreciation towards a more club-oriented sound, and the ability to keep feet shuffling and heads bopping.

With DTW Singles, our artists and affiliates are given a chance to express a rousing dimension of the label's sounds - ranging from Chicago and Detroit-influenced House bangers, UK Bass / Garage to South side Deep Trap, all while still maintaining the distinct soul and rhythm - but wired for an all-nighter. We are all accustomed to that feeling.

Launching this series is Samuel Truth, a producer from Auckland, New Zealand. After being acquainted with DTW through Twitter, his diversity and competence in his production style was a hit with listeners, who lapped up his free downloads, such as 'Caspian' and a remix of 'J Holiday - Bed'. Most recently his self-released monster 'Rua' has cemented him as one of the names to look out for, even earning new fans in the form of Majestic Casual, Potholes In My blog and many others.

'Thrillho' propels the Trap sound with incredible groove and sets off with a warm and heavy bass - a good starter to get any floor moving.

The Wheel

Electronic producer Flako resides in London and has previously called Berlin and Chile home, but the lead track from his forthcoming Eclosure 12″ sounds as if it emerged from across the pond– specifically, from the burbling wonkiness of Los Angeles’ Flying Lotus-fronted Brainfeeder beat crew. Oftentimes, the sound that comes from Brainfeeder artists can resemble something of a locked groove, but “Honey Drips” opens up beautifully, dissolving into a soup of keyboard runs and tangled vocals. The Eclosure 12″ is out November 5 via Five Easy Pieces. (Pitchfork)

Heidi Vogel debuts her solo album ‘Turn up the Quiet’ following on from her many successes with the critically acclaimed Cinematic Orchestra (Ninja Tune). A deeply moving collection of classic 60s/70s Brazilian songs, interpreted and presented in a unique, intimate fashion and with a timeless sound. 

Heidi has a voice that comes from the deepest places of the heart.  Her honest interpretation of songs, and powerful stage presence make her an utterly beguiling performer and this is the blend that emerges from her debut solo album ‘Turn up the Quiet’ where she elegantly interprets songs of great composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Vinicius de Moraes and Joe Henderson.

Recorded and mixed by Demus at Fish Factory & Mancrush Studios, this album showcases the singer’s undeniable connection and resounding passion for Brazilian music. Her capacity to unfurl long-lined melodies unveils her intimate yet direct presence that goes beyond genre or style. Heidi is accompanied throughout the album by the very talented guitarist Josue Ferreira as well as guests musicians including vocalist Cleveland Watkiss, pianist Austin Peralta and Ivo Neame. The album is enhanced further by remixes from The Cinematic Orchestra, IG Culture and Emanative.

Initially making her professional debut touring with Cirque du Soleil, she became a frequent face in the London and LA jazz & soul scene where she became involved with The Cinematic Orchestra as their lead singer. This platform established her extraordinarily rich and complex vocal timbre and built her reputation outside of her home city of London, UK. By 2007, Vogel had toured all over the USA, Australia, South Africa, Canada and Europe and ended the year with a sold out concert at The Royal Albert Hall and a stunning performance live on the Jimmy Kimmel TV show. She then went on to perform the main stage at The Big Chill Festival UK in 2010, and the following year graced the stage as support for Erykah Badu at Dubai’s Chill Out Festival amongst numerous other appearances at North Sea Jazz Festival, Coachella, Gilles Peterson Worldwide and Blue Note Jazz Festival. With every performance, Heidi has been steadily exceeding her rich vocal abilities whilst gaining influential critics’ approval as a soloist. 

Her signature musicality and technique which entrances the listener is captured perfectly in this full-length offering “Turn up the quiet” which Far Out is delighted to present to a new audience
