The artist for this cover is "Jasmine :D", that's all the credit she wants for some reason. We're not questioning it, she did an amazing job regardless.

The Long and Winding Road

A deceivingly simple track I made over the course of a week or so. It's nothing outlandish, but I felt like it perfectly fit what was requested as part of Captain Mack's series.

"Kotan" effectively translates to "Village" in the Ainu language, which is one of the many things about Ainu culture I learned in Golden Kamuy. It's genuinely the best series I've ever read and I wouldn't have read it unless Mack suggested it to me, and I'm glad I got to make these songs for him because of it. For free, mind you.

The man saved himself possibly thousands in music because I wound up liking it so much.

Beyond the Hadal Abyss - Kotan

This song shares a leitmotif with its sister track, 'Horkew Oskoni', you'll probably be able to spot it quite easily. While other songs in this album were made semi-randomly, such as 'Quiet Contemplation of a Squid' and 'Kotan', this one was specifically requested by Captain Mack. It was one of the last to be made in the whole album, so it was ever so slightly rushed in some aspects, but luckily Kyana assisted with the strings near the end, since I sometimes struggle with them.

Beyond the Hadal Abyss - Horkew Kamuy

A track originally commissioned as a - i quote - "legally distinct version" of 旅の幕開け(Tabi No Makuake) from the Golden Kamuy OST. Naturally, it has a decent bit of parallels, but I think I managed to transform and transcend them quite well, while staying true to the source material.
The majority of the song somehow ended up being finished in 3 days (including the day of the deadline) after working on it for about a month.

Beyond the Hadal Abyss - Nori

Despite how long Golden Kamuy is, there's no meaningful inclusion of squids anywhere, unless we factor in that one panel near the end of the manga where Shiraishi has a squid on top of his head.

Either way, this song originally wasn't meant to be part of the album, it was originally part of our 'Rift', where we stockpile unfinished songs, and this song was more or less doomed to stay in there forever due to the fact that my PC blew up during all this.

Captain Mack, however, had different plans. He sifted through the Rift and selected this, and another song, for restoration. It wasn't easy but we got it done, and despite not really having quite any creative connection to Golden Kamuy, it's still a bit of an important song to me.

Just a quick one I whipped up in the downtime between making other tracks for the album. I needed something else to put time into without working on the same project for hours and hours on end otherwise I'd've gone insane.

But anywhos, this one's named after Lake Akan, the location for Akanko Ainu Kotan, enjoy.

Beyond the Hadal Abyss - Drums of Akan

I don't have much to say about this song, it's mostly meant to capture the essence of a snowy Hokkaido forest and follows an intended story that you'll have to read Golden Kamuy for.
The outro - while it is a weird switchup - is definitely my favourite part of this entire thing. I kinda missed making something less strictly "orchestral", so I just went at it and made it work in post. It also intentionally doesn't resolve back to its root chord, and if you want to know why, ʀᴇᴀᴅ ɢᴏʟᴅᴇɴ ᴋᴀᴍᴜʏ ɢᴏᴅ ᴅᴀᴍɴɪᴛ.

Mildly fun fact: the entire first half was improvised on piano, written in a day and stayed pretty much how it is now for the whole time. Wild how that can work.

Anyways, this song probably wouldn't sound nearly as good without Noa helping me drastically on gluing it together, filling the spatial gaps in the mix and adding little bits here and there that make it even more satisfying.

Beyond the Hadal Abyss - барчонок

While I'm satisfied with the result of this song, having originally started it as a solo project to see what I could do with some new toys I had gotten my hands on - namely that koto, I find myself more proud of the artwork, than I am the song.

I commissioned a friend of mine, someone close to half my age, but twice the talent, with the prompt that they just need to listen to the song, and just create whatever comes to mind. No rules, no restrictions, just do whatever.

I genuinely could not be happier with the end result, even if the cover does cut off a good chunk of it - I'll be posting the full version somewhere soon. Sadly, they don't have any socials for me to post right now, but I'm hoping that'll change in the future. With how much potential they showcase, I hope we can give them the spotlight they deserve.

Also, to add, this song existed quite a while before Captain Mack requested our help with his Golden Kamuy video, and originally was supposed to exist as a standalone track, but Mack saw fit to use it where he thought was best, and good lord he made it work alright. That man is hella talented.
