California-bred Robert Yang, also known as Bézier, is an American DJ and producer. While best known for being one of the earliest members of the queer San Francisco musical collective Honey Soundsystem, Yang also produces under multiple aliases and heads three blooming labels, Bodyzone, m-i-v (short for mémoire involontaire), and his most recent endeavor, Piece of Work. Bézier cut his teeth in the San Francisco scene for a decade, and now toggles between Berlin and SF, where he continues to expand his sound and vision into a cohesive yet dynamic mosaic.

Yang moved to San Francisco in 2005, spawning an era of pivotal connection and collaboration that cemented Bézier’s identity as a DJ and producer. Equipped with an array of analog equipment, Bezier has toured in cities across Asia, Europe and the U.S. A master of synth work, Bézier employs a range of analog synthesizers to create highly textured tracks that recall a retro-futuristic soundscape. Though often pop-infused and Italo-leaning, Bézier’s productions also wander the darker spaces of EBM and techno. As of 2021, Yang took on another alias 羅伯特 (pinyin: Luōbótè, transliterates to Robert) under a newly-conceived label, Piece of Work.

Sister Zo re-imagines the Discotheque with a dark and sexy chug that’ll drive the children to the dancefloor the world over.

Zoey Shopmaker aka @SisterZo is a DJ and producer from Kansas City, MO. She runs the record label and collective, UN/TUCK, from her current home in Columbus, OH, where she lives with her partner, Dan Miles. A member and resident host for the regional independent radio, Verge.FM, Zo assists with coordinating skillshares for members of the community as well as holding down her own monthly show, The Inside. She also co-runs the KC-based party, Whole Moods, with her long time friend and collaborator Coughman.

A new mix...for a project that has been sitting around. @bodyzone is something I started where I released two mixtapes of original music back in 2020. Four years later, I thought it was only fitting to start this up again by releasing a recording dedicated to the Midwest since the actual 'Body Zone' is a gay bathhouse located in Detroit which is a 5 minute drive to Menjos where the infamous Club Toilet parties take place.

This mix is a reflection of the set I played when I was invited this last year in 2023. Through all the practice sessions and preparations I made to get myself up on that stage, I found a few decent recordings and versions of what I played that night during Movement weekend. Consider this my Club Toilet retrospective.

The EP by Bézier “Negative Velocity” sees the Californian artist (now for a few years a Berlin resident) initiate the launch of their new German-based record label @korperspannung

Bézier, whose career (since the early 00’s) spans nearly two decades of focused, ground laying work: from lighting up the Honey Soundsystem collective’s bulbs to generating a steady pulse of releases on Josh Cheon’s Dark Entries records, has built a dynamic repertoire weaving a mosaic of influences across cultures, generations and spaces. A lifelong learner of music from an early age Robert Yang has been under constant calling to deploy music in an artful, stylish and meaningful way.

For ‘Negative Velocity’, Bézier collaborated with Bay Area drummer and avant-garde musician Dave Easlick taking live recordings of him on a drum kit warping and wrapping his parts into curves and ellipses that project mappings outward into the atmosphere. From Easlick’s source material Bézier generates a technological, multi-dimensional landscape through mental manipulation of sound waves bending the fabric of time and space. For both the title track and on the b-side ‘Diabolical Embroidery’ the lattice work here involved sampling and resampling every hit and puncture from Easlick to atomize, pressurize, polish and disintegrate into fine particulate matter while reassembling parts back together fortifying the sonic tapestry further and further and further… 

‘Deep Sea State’ is an exercise showcasing the raw form of Easlick’s drumming but laced with an adamantium frame. Melodies from Bézier’s musical training past haunt the entire interlude.

Honey Soundsystem is pleased to release 'Cosmologist', the latest offering from our Resident DJ: Robert Yang aka Bézier. A multi-instrumentalist, Robert was trained in saxophone starting at age 10, before moving onto a Fender Telecaster after high school. After being exposed to Southern California rave culture in the late 90s, he moved onto DJing and collecting records. By the time he planted his roots in San Francisco in 2005, Robert had built an impressive analog synth-based studio, which also serves as the creative hub for his riveting live performances.

'Cosmologist' explores Robert’s personal universe with three tracks that connect his varied musical lineages. "Cosmos", a celebration of the late 80s/early 90s KIIS FM universe, is built around an infectious freestyle hook that morphs into a seven minute tour of intersecting styles. "Ether" begins as gothic night-driving electro, but breaks into fantasy-scapes inspired by Italo and 1980s Japanese anime theme songs. The final track, "d. Quelle", clocks in at over 11 minutes, incorporating bebop jazz solos drawn from his early exposure to improvisation techniques by Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, and Stan Getz. All songs have been mixed by Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto, Consolidated) at Room 5, San Francisco and EQed for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.
