Stephan Mathieu "To Describe George Washington Bridge" (Dekorder 051)

String Machine 2 entailed the commissioning of new recorded works for stringed instruments from Donal Lunny and Leopold Hurt. These works were then used as the sole source material for digital re-compositions by David Dohohoe & Eamonn Doyle and Stephan Mathieu. All sounds in the re-compositions were generated exclusively from the bouzouki and zither using various digital processes.

A text converted to binary code, used to generate tonal values and durations which are played by a chest of viols, recorded and then cut onto four 78rpm dubplates, played back by four mechanical-acoustic gramophones and re-recorded with a customized stereo set of large diaphragm microphones.
