Lyrics: Originating from The Rig Veda (the oldest translatable Vedic Sanskrit text) meaning "Verses of Wisdom", a book of ancient Indian poems on religion and ritual. The Gayatri Mantra verse is found in Mandala 3, Hymn 62, Verse 10.

Description:
The Gayatri Mantra follows a specific rhythm known as the Gayatri meter, composed of 24 syllables divided into three lines of eight syllables each. "Aum" is automatically added at the start (Adi Shankaracharya) of these verses, which gives the naturally expected correct meter:

ॐ (Aum) तत (Tat) सवितुर (Sa-vi-tur) वरेण्यम (Va-renn-yum)
भर्गो (Bhar-go) देवस्य (De-vas-ya) धीमहि (Dhee-ma-hee)
धियो (Dhee-yo) यो (Yo) नः (Nah) प्रचोदयात् (Pra-cho-da-yaat)

Commonly in popular culture, a ritualistic, formal extension of "Aum" is used: "Bhuur Bhuvah Swaha". The added use of "Bhuur Bhuvah Swaha" is not featured in the original presentation of The Gayatri Mantra. This extension was a later Vedic addition for ritualized practice. There's also much longer Vedic ritualized versions.

Translation:
Om (AUM) The infinite, boundless, timeless Source of all existence, That (TAT) Transcendent Divine Sun (SA-VI-TUR) is what is most adorable and worthy of worship (VA-RENN-YUM), Glorious Illumination (BHAR-GO) of Radiant Divinity (DE-VAS-YA) meditate upon (DHEE-MA-HEE), so our consciousness (DHEE-YO YO NAH) It may fill with Light (PRA-CHO-DA-YAAT)

Aum is a sonic representation of the Divine. Aum here, as in many mantras, is being used as an introduction; something to help begin putting your mind in the right direction. It's like a formal bow to start things off.

Tat comes next, which is a bold, no-nonsense finger pointing gesture. It means "That". It goes where words cannot, instead it points to the transcendent Divine within yourself. To compare this with something known in popular culture: this is a "Zen pointing" type gesture.

Savitur follows directly after Tat - "That Savitur"; the finger is pointing directly at you. This means that the source of life is within yourself. Savitur is the Divine Sun, the universal spring of life itself.

Varennyum comes directly next stating that this Divine within yourself is what you should be focused on instead of worldly things, because this Divine Source is the actual living quality of life, as opposed to the shadows of the world. Varennyum means that which is appropriate for worship as opposed to that which is not.

Bhargo starts off the next line of the mantra. Bhargo is a guiding light. Bhargo Devasya, means "Divine Living Light".

Dheemahee concludes the second verse. This word is telling you to focus on and contemplate on this "Divine Light", so you can be more aware of its guidance and upliftment.

Dheeyo Yo Nah Prachodayaat is the concluding line of the mantra. It makes it clear as to exactly why and what the results are in taking this spiritual action. This action is done so that you become spiritually Enlightened ("filled with Light"), which means that you become consciously aware of the Divine within yourself. You become filled with "Divine Light" because you learn how to stop eclipsing it; you are no longer separate from "That".
