My first proper music video, (Link to Video : http://youtu.be/QPT3uup_pOU), I have had the amazing opportunity to work with the Nightingale of California, Meera Manohar in a re-arragment of the song by Ouseppachan, Andhi Maalai.


The tune of the song is heavily derived from the famous kriti of Saint Thyagaraja, 'Endaro Mahanubhavulu'. Meera and I both love this Thyagaraja swamy krithi and so decided that as our first project, we will do a re-arrangement of the Andhi Maalai song. :-D

The original album was released under A R Rahman's name although he had played only as a keyboardist*. The vocals were by S Janaki in the original version with lyrics by Vairamuthu

Here is my short description on the song: A mom sings to her boy and says please come fast my child and show me your face. The boy is Krishna. Then she goes on describing the great feats her son has achieved. Now the words say fast, "come krishna come fast", that is what the first line means. And one may surely argue that this must be sung fast and not slow. But I feel the description that comes afterwords suggests that the mom is actually describing her child also, which actually puts forth the question, is she in a hurry? So, is the word fast, just a way of showing her yearning to she her boy? Would you praise your child when you are desperate to see him? I dont think so. People may also say, during the first line the mom is just seeing whether her son is there. When the statement repeats again, however, she actually wants him to come and when it repeats again, she wants him "there" and so on (This is surely a good way to look at any song as it leads to lot of musical exploration ). This is portrayed musically by adding more gamakas, where the note stops, volume e.t.c. e.t.c. Though analysis is a good way to look at music, analysis is not music. Music is just what you feel that day. Sometimes an entire day you can be yearning to see your child and not be angry at him or anything, that is what I try to portray in my version. PS. It is so much fun singing Yaman Kalyani, slow :)

I present this video as a dedication to A R Rahman, whose birthday falls on January 6th :D (Once I had completed the video, I couldn't wait to share it, so uploading it almost a week in advance ;-) )

I grew up in the '90s when A R Rahman had broken into the music scene with a blast through Roja. The music of A R Rahman from the '90s is very close to me and I would believe to many of us who grew up with A R Rahman during that period. So as a tribute to AR who turns 50 (can't believe that!!), I have put together a medley of eight songs, choosing one song for each year from 1992 to 1999. 

The most difficult part was not in choosing a song for a particular year but rather in not choosing the amazing songs that kept coming from him year after year then. I hope I have done justice. Thank you A R Rahman for your wonderful music, which never fails to remind us of our childhood!
