Students from Ms. Jennifer Larsson's 9th grade Literacy class have been participating in a youth radio program initiated by Dr. Dana Walker, professor in education from the University of Northern Colorado, and local filmmaker Juan Ignacio Stewart. Rather than repeating the traditional models of literacy education, students in Ms. Larsson's class have been writing and producing radio stories and poetry related to topics and issues relevant to their lives. Stories range from border crossing, the immigrant experience, discrimination and racism, to teen pregnancy, gangs, the Dream Act, and trying to attend college as a low-income immigrant student.

In the Fall of 2013 students developed poetry and spoken word with award-winning author Tim Z. Hernandez and producing radio feature stories with local filmmaker Juan Ignacio Stewart. The poetry and spoken and spoken word focus on the Americas Latino Festival theme of migration and transformation.

BACKGROUND

For the past four years students from Ms. Jennifer Larsson's 6th been participating in a youth radio and radio arts program in collaboration with Dr. Dana Walker, professor of education at the University of Northern Colorado, and local filmmaker Juan Ignacio Stewart. Rather than reproducing the traditional models of literacy education, students in Ms. Larsson's classes have been writing and producing radio stories and poetry related to topics relevant to their lives. Stories range from border crossing, the immigrant experience, discrimination and racism, to teen pregnancy, gangs, the Dream Act, and trying to attend college as a low-income immigrant student. 

FALL 2013

Students are developing poetry and spoken word with award-winning poet and novelist Tim Z. Hernandez and producing radio feature stories with local filmmaker Juan Ignacio Stewart. The poetry and spoken word pieces focus on the Americas Latino Festival theme of migration and transformation, represented by the symbol of “La Monarca” butterfly. Feature stories address topics that will be presented by some of the world-renowned panelists and guest speakers participating in the Festival.

BOULDER HIGH YOUTH RADIO INSTALLATION @ AMERICAS LATINO FESTIVAL

This semester, Ms. Larsson’s class is taking advantage of the amazing opportunity to participate in the first environmental and social justice Latino festival in the U.S., to be held in Boulder, CO. Students will be showcasing their work at the festival through an installation set up in one of the festival's main centers of activity, the CU Boulder Museum. The installation consists of "listening stations" where festival participants, families and youth can stop, listen-to, and interact with a variety of youth radio stories and recorded poetry produced by the students. The exhibit will be showcased during the America's Latino Festival on Sunday, November 17th and has also been accepted to be a long-term exhibit at CU's Museum of Natural History.
