For the 52nd edition, we bring you a mix from DJ, Music writer, editor, experimental synth player and creator of Bibioteka Records, Sonja.

As a DJ, Sonja enjoys to play with and within genres, touching on leftfield techno and deep house. As a musician, commanding her analogue hardware, She creates and explores improvised, alien and fleeting sets that have a mix of deconstructed drone, ambient, club and noise music. Sonja released her first experimental/Modular EP in October 2020, entitled ‘Grounding’

Sonja tells us a little bit about the mix with the track ID below...

"I always want to have fun and throw my desire for silliness and goofing off into my mixes. While I take myself seriously as a DJ, I also acknowledge that a lot of the music I listen to is just about having a good time. Techno transports me into a dark room where I can be myself and experiment and dance and move. Techno is especially dark, and I wanted to approach this mix from a lighter perspective, blending together harsh techno tracks with minimal and looser ones for a mix that veers a little bit left of what's expected.

New single coming out called “He Came Back,” from our artist Rafael Khan and his long-time friend and collaborator, Stashole, playing together as RISK.

Both Rafael and Stashole are known in the underground Toronto scene for their harsh, heavy techno sounds and live sets. Rafael Khan is an electronic music producer, DJ, and software engineer based in Toronto. He has a fascination with anything and everything related to music technology, currently driving his own endeavours as both a musician and engineer.

Stashole is a Russian-Canadian producer who's been producing various genres on and off for several years and DJing since around January 2020. Lately, he's been focused on working with dark industrial sounds, and he had a track released on Measure Divide’s Isolate Exp. project earlier in 2020.

Both Rafael and Stashole have extensive work experience with modular synthesizers, often relying on them for their releases. A side project, Okay Synthesizer, is a product born out of necessity, a new module the two of them are working on in a team.

Sonja, also known as Sofie Mikhaylova, is a DJ, experimental synth artist, music writer and editor, workshop organizer and facilitator, and creator of independent record label Biblioteka Records. As a DJ, she enjoys playing with genres touching leftfield techno and deep house, and has a monthly residency on Miami-based station Empty Plate Radio. She also curates DJ mix series Sonja and Friends. As a musician, she relies on analogue hardware for improvised, alien, and fleeting modular synthesizer sets that play with, at different times, deconstructed drone, ambient, club, and noise music. In October 2020, she released her first experimental modular/found sounds EP, “Grounding.” In addition to making music, she also curates and teaches workshops on topics ranging from beginner guides to modular synthesis and music production to starting one’s own record label. 

The coming 60 minutes you will be offered an experimental techno mix featuring some recent additions to Sonja's collection and some of her longtime favourites. 
Some words by Sonja: "I had wanted to do just a pure hard techno mix, but, since a lot of these songs wouldn’t really make a ton of sense in the club, and we don’t know when we’ll ever be back in there, I wanted to take this opportunity to mix some of my more unusual techno selections together. This mix is an ode to the most underground of underground parties, of fluctuating songs, to disco lovers, to colourful, dressed up techno fans, to dancers beyond the all black. It’s an ode to dancing in general, moving the body freely, connecting with the music. It’s a combination of darker sounds with elements of joyful freedom. As a DJ, I’ve always felt my role was to move and surprise. The Britney Spears remix at the end of this mix is an air kiss blown to the shameless pop music lovers who are always ready to have fun on the dancefloor, to be non judgemental. The techno scene can be so painfully purist sometimes. It doesn’t have to be so serious. Music can be fun. Let the rhythm show you how to explore and experiment."
