On January 21st, 2023, over 300 musicians and visual artists challenged themselves to create something in only 18 hours. Visual artists had to create a unique album cover & its supporting graphics, and musicians were limited to no less than 50 seconds and no more than 70 seconds for their songs; in short, a speedrun. The event encouraged creatives to think outside the box, picking their ideas apart in order to keep only the essentials. At the finish line, we received some of the most exciting tracks on a FORM compilation to date.

In the colors of each album cover and between the notes of each song are reflections of us— the artists. To leave pieces of ourselves *out* in lieu of a time constraint isn't easy, but it allows us to conclude what's at the center of what we create. Creativity, no matter how bare-bones or how complex & nuanced it is, is something nobody can ever take away.

All proceeds from any% will be going to SpecialEffect, a charity working to make video games accessible to those with physical disabilities.

All’interno del Ghiffa Summer Festival, il produttore di musica elettronica di Verbania Alberto Ricca, ha tenuto un laboratorio di due giorni interamente dedicato alla possibilità di creare musica originale con l’uso di uno strumento come il cellulare, dal titolo Ascolto Artificiale.
Lo scorso luglio i partecipanti sono stati impegnati in una attività di field recording, tra il lago e i boschi, tra le montagne e i paesi. Hanno costruito un archivio che è stato poi processato grazie all’utilizzo dell’intelligenza artificiale. Il risultato di questo esperimento unico è stato proposto il 31 luglio nell’Arena di Ronco, a picco sul Lago, e siamo molto orgogliosi di presentarlo in esclusiva sulle nostre pagine.

MP3 changed the aural world as the first digital technology to compress audio, interpreting it through perceptual coding that models the standard human, hearing standard sounds, in order to sell and share them. Today, in the era of streaming and virtual meetings, bandwidth has become an even scarcer commodity: Artificial Intelligence comes to help, but the current codecs, such as Lyra by Google, or Opus, used by Whatsapp and Discord, present a sound reconstructed on the basis of their reference corpuses, and fine-tuned for speech – »good enough«, as defined by Sterne. A model is trained to efficiently distinguish noise from voiced information, and to rebuild a synthetic simulacrum of them, neutering context. When this happens, whose voice is your voice? Whose ears are your ears? And if, following Marius Schneider, sounds create the world, what is the world those models remember?

The research stems from a technical analysis of these codecs, their bias and their proven limits and virtues, to focus on the consequences of this widespread acceptance of apparently transparent audio transmission: a social, efficiency-driven homogenization of the soundscape; the elimination of more-than-human sounds. leading to a deeper dissonance in authenticity of the acoustic ecology; and creative possibilities hidden in abusing the emergence of meta-human debris.
