This set pays tribute to the big electric Saturday nights into chill Sunday mornings. When companies like Dose, Syrous, Destiny & BetterDays ruled the illegal warehouses and could command gatherings in the thousands. It was pleasure to experience these events as the DJ. This was close to the end of the big rave in Toronto and as this mix represents, the end of Chemical Beats.

Retrorespect Vol. 2 Pure Limelight 98-01
This set pays tribute to Pure @ Limelight Wednesdays. That was the place to be on Wednesdays to either start your weekend or end it depending which way you looked at it. Starting sometime in the summer of 1996, me and my friends would stand in these long lines that went well into the firehouse a few doors down on Richmond St. We’d grease our bouncer the late great Huey, pay Renee at the door, then off to a guaranteed slamming night. I really don’t know how this city functioned on a Thursday morning with 1000+ of its young generation partying till the morning hours.  
Limelight is where I met John E, Peter Ivals and Craig Pettigrew who ran PURE. This was the midweek spot by this time and it really didn’t need anyone else on its roster (especially an unknown breaks guy at that point). But sometime in 1998 they added Mystical Influence, Myka and myself to the regular rotation. So I went from the guy just trying to get into the club, to a resident for the guy who in a lot of ways would become my mentor in the scene. 
Which brings me to the subject of John E. 
John E was arguably billed on the most shows for an electronic DJ in Ontario for that decade.  His style was this happy house  mixed with a splattering of breaks. It was the breaks that appealed to me and I’d travel to see him just in case he might drop 1 or 2 breaks tracks in his sets (it would be worth it). He was my favorite DJ to watch spin as his technic was different , unique and flawless. I think by the time 1998 rolled around he was starting to look to pass the torch and move to that elder statesman promoter type roll. Both Myka and myself managed to use PURE as our jumping off point because of Craig and John. The thing is, I didn’t even know those dudes on a personal level until they asked me to join PURE. So they owed me nothing they just liked what they heard. I would go on to become good friends with them and we worked on so many other events, nights, and mix tapes together. The guests for a Wednesday night was also something to boast about Grandmaster Flash, Cevin Fisher, Robert De La Gauthier,  Czech, Adam Freeland, Donald Glaude, Dj Dan etc.  
So there we were the PURE, METRO, KICKIT team killing it on Wednesday at Limelight until we moved to the Guvernment in April 2000. After a stint at the Guvernement for PURE Wednesdays, I would return to Limelight with many of the same crew but under Craig’s OUT OF HAND production company. We did that for a few more years but it wasn’t the same.
