The 7th instalment of our In:Focus Series places the spotlight on a very specific point in time - The Early Deepchord records years.

In the late 1990s the Deepchord record label was co-founded by Rod Modell & Mike Schommer in Detroit, Michigan. After just four years and achieving far more success than initially anticipated, DeepChord Records wound down operations. For this In Focus we want to concentrate specifically on the work that Rod and Mike did before they disbanded.

Across the Dub Techno scene the name Deepchord carries the highest of gravitas. Elite level quality, and considered by many to be, alongside Basic Channel, the blueprint of the genre.

So much has been written about Deepchord over the years, and we're not here to repeat what's been said (you can check out a great interview with Mike from a few years ago here - inn8.net/interview-with-mike-schommer-deepchord/ ), we're here to celebrate the music and we hope that through this session we have done that.

Take It Back EP 

Scissor & Thread ramp up the heat with the debut release by Virginia’s deep house don, DJ Aakmael (@dj-aakmael).

Known for his infectious grooves and deep and intricate instrumentation for more than two decades, this four track EP is in no short supply of teased out, peak time, classic deep house.

The titular track wastes no time on the A-side with its hard hitting kick and springy bass holding court, while a hypnotic serpentine synth snakes along.

The A2, What Iz Deep House, is a lesson for those who don’t know what true deep house is. Woozy, edgy chords take the spotlight as a dissociated voice slurs, “what is deep house?” A relentlessly thick kick, along with sharp as razors hi-hats and snaps, throttle the track into peak time territory.

On the flip, Sands is an aquatic affair, with its reverb laden pads and piano chord stabs submerging the floor in pelagic atmosphere. The persistent, euphoric bassline bump effortlessly slides its hooks into the listeners ears before a celestial piano melody pierces through the depths.

Frank & Tony take things even deeper with their late night Breakaway Dub, applying their signature bass line touch and hi-hat shuffle in what may be their best remix to date.

In the early 1990s, mangueboys and manguegirls stimulated fertility in the veins of Recife, Brazil. They were interested in hip-hop, the collapse of modernity, chaos and marine predator attacks (mainly sharks). Armed with boundless creativity, they turned one of the world’s most poverty-stricken cities into one of Brazil’s greatest centers of culture. Mangue artists mixed hip-hop, Jamaican raggamuffin and punk rock with traditions from Brazil’s northeast like maracatu and embolada. In this program, we explore the legacy of the mangue bit movement and its biggest star, Chico Science of Nação Zumbi. We also take a look at a new generation of adventurous musicians in Recife. Join us as we connect the good vibrations of the mangue with the world network of pop!

Mysterium

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
