Northeast London-based Helter drops his first release of 2021 with six tracks of bustling, nostalgia-tinged house for an uncertain world. “Double Crush” is a warehouse workout wrapped in melancholia and stitched together with punching basslines, airy synths and shimmering pads. Each track is anchored by simple, dancefloor-centric rhythms and shot through with threads of melody and warmth, from the sweepy opener “Chord Circles” through the silky “Absence” to the expansive “Fixable.” On the heels of EPs on Truth and Forgot Imprint last year, “Double Crush” is doubtless indebted to electronic music’s trailblazers yet fresh and forward-thinking enough to forge a path of its own.
