After vocal-led 12”s featuring the likes of Razor and Sikka Rymes, Low End Activist pivots back towards purely instrumental territory for further explorations in the hybridised hardcore sphere. There’s an over-arching air of introspection to the five tracks assembled here, as LEA’s signature bass ructions and jagged, roughly-hewn drums offset with a widescreen line in melancholia.

To celebrate the 40th addition to our catalog, the extended "Remodeled and Reworked Vol. 1", we look at some of our best moments with a second remix collection.

This coming Monday is a beautiful day to welcome Julien Aubert – the Swiss techno wizard of Creaked Records – back to the label with his first release in four years – Mechanic EP. The three original tracks and three remixes cast a hypnotizing spell with their dubbed out atmospheres and heavy hitting rhythms. Play, rinse, repeat.

Because Mechanic is pretty damn special, Julien agreed to share the exclusive stream of the EP in full with Big Up family, as well as have a quick chat about some of the stories behind it…

Henry Greenleaf - Second Cable

Corvum is the latest artist to release on Analog Section Records, a well-known veteran producer, composer, sound designer and beatmaker. 

He offers two slices of complex techno remixed by label owner SARF and the Swiss virtuoso Isolated Lines, all part of his "Cosmoneurosis" EP.

Isolated Lines rewrites "Neurosis", getting some of the original drums, aligning everything over a solid kick and using the string samples in a very creative way. The feeling is a mixture of modern techno and the old industrial days: distortion and harmony all in one.

Pev re-masters and re-issues a lead track from his debut LP 'Jarvik Mindstate' on Punch Drunk alongside a newly unearthed and previously unreleased track from 2008.

A leading protagonist of a nascent, more techno indebted sound in the 07/08 dubstep era, alongside peers such as Martyn, 2562 & Appleblim, Peverelist released a series of tracks that helped shape and define that scene. Alongside 'Infinity is Now' (Tectonic), Circling (w/ Appleblim – Skull Disco) and 'The Grind on Punch Drunk to name a few, Bluez was a standout track fusing melancholic Detroit style synths with the dub-wise aesthetics of the UK underground. Peverelist has since explored these themes further with his pioneering Livity Sound label. This release revisits the roots of his sound a decade on.

@Thugwidow lands on @CR_label with a four-track take on dark, skeletal d'nb and jungle cast far into a future age. 

Titled 'Automatic Rhythm', the release is first in the label's new digital-only series. Inspired in part, says the producer, by a move from the north of England to the south, the EP showcases the impact new environments and experiences have on musical experimentation.

Today we're premiering cut 'Blacklight', an anxious yet highly refined, technical track built with lashings of ambience, choice rhythmic shifts and serious dancefloor appeal.

"It's inspired by London, it feels so different to Manchester," says Thugwidow on the EP. "I feel so different now, I've changed completely I feel... maybe coincidentally."

Serving up his signature style of big drops, frenetic growls and mutated bass, the A-side sees leading tracks 'Garvey' and 'They Know' marry his legendary origins in Dubstep with the carefully crafted, UK-techno assaults of his recent work.

Early support from Mall Grab, Darwin, and Loefah puts the tracks firmly in the UK techno scene’s ‘gully-130’ dangerzone.

The B-side sees Biome exploring his sound further. 'Equinox’s' dense textures perfectly accommodate its dub-heavy moments as it subtly creeps into the listener’s brain, whilst 'Stagger’s' laser-sharp groove explodes in bursts of energy as it scales the heights of its 81-style soundscape.

The aptly-named 'Conquer' brings the They Know EP to its gut-wrenching climax, starting with suspense-building hi-hats and ending with an aggressive breach of tech-out rollage: dark, bassline-driven UKG at its finest.

Designed for dark spaces and big soundsystems, KAIZEN continually moving forward.

A 10-track compilation featuring 8 artists part of our close circle. The project is diverse throughout and hopes to shine a light through this period of isolation.

We've not done a compilation since Ample back in 2017 - that was probably our first major release. Between then and now the idea of doing a compilation hadn't quite pushed Panel to what we wanted it to be. We'd get these incredible tracks in, and try to weave them into wider more considered projects, but this idea of an interconnected compilation never came together. Other projects - Anamnesis, Settle, Reprezent, etc - took priority. Then, just as the pieces for a compilation came together, COVID happened. And with it, a narrative and purpose for Inside Hour was created.

We know the NHS isn't a charity, nor should it be treated as such. Rather than public fundraising be treated as the norm, it should be able to rely on state responsibility. But this situation is incredibly difficult for many people, and we all have friends and family working the frontlines. As everything continues to unfold, we've been extremely lucky to have this project to escape to, allowing us to help keep ourselves and everyone associated creatively occupied. As such, for creating this space that has given us this privilege of escapism, we will be donating all the proceeds from this release to the NHS (and avoid Virgin Giving).

This compilation hopes to be an outlet, a light and an escapism for all of you through this period, just as it has been for all of us. But we also think it signifies the togetherness we hope everyone's been experiencing in recent months.

Isolated Lines is a Swiss musician exploring dense and rhythmically experimental techno.
The man behind the moniker has been involved in band projects, sound engineering jobs and Switzerland's underground music scene in general for some years. Coming from a background of listening to and playing in rock, indie and noise groups, his tracks are as much informed by the energy and dynamics of live performance and sound science as they are by the endless possibilities of electronic production. So far, they have found a home on established Swiss label Creaked and been picked up by labels such as 47, 30D, Illegal Allien or Prophet Recordings among others.

Isolated Lines productions are warmly textural and full of subtleties, usually favouring trippy, hypnotic grooves over outright aggression. Whilst most of the detail is consciously designed, Isolated Lines makes music in a way which leaves space for randomness and organic elements; listen to the off-kilter swing of 'Raze' or his remix for Gaspard De La Montagne, for example. Especially through a decent sound system, the layers evolve and interact with an exciting air of unpredictability.

As with his studio gear, the live setup is subject to constant change and development. Certain characteristics remain within the sound and the way it is presented though: ambitious arrangements, soaring, euphoric pads and hard-hitting drums. His material is versatile enough for pitch-black basements and early morning festival sets alike.
