Patrick Russell is a true veteran of the underground, perhaps one of the last unsung heroes of a now lost era in the Midwest. He magically transforms the diaspora of pure jack energy into a fluent sonic dialog that never fails to devastate both minds and dance floor. 

A Detroit-bred DJ, artist and producer since the early 90's, Patrick has now made Brooklyn his home. His lengthy resume includes such highlights as an exclusive 2007 set with Jeff Mills in Detroit, performing at the 2001 & 2008 DEMF/Movement festivals in Detroit, more recent appearances at Boiler Room, Unsound, and BEMF in New York, to being a key figure in the now legendary No Way Back parties. In addition, he has been steadily building a strong catalog of high-profile remixes to compliment his increasingly varied and in-demand DJ sets.

His consummate taste and ecstatic yet disciplined execution have created a respect that cannot be purchased. Patrick is not just one to watch, he is one to be experienced.

A lot’s been said about the Keysound label’s recent renaissance; the outfit’s steadfast focus on its cluster of talented producers and the work they’ve been collectively producing. Albums from Logos, Wen and a just announced second record for the label LV have all been incredibly well received and if anything else, those long players only serve to underline and highlight in a thick red sharpie the ideas and ethos of the imprint. Run by Dusk & Blackdown, there’s always been a very particular element to Keysound material, whether that’s the space, the bass or the rolling club mindedness of it all but it’s never been so much of a definable thing (and it never should be). To me, that’s why the boss duo’s Rinse FM broadcasts are so interesting and listenable, because amongst all of it, it’s just them trying to make sense of and find a theme through the music they’re sent.

Ahead of the upcoming Keysound takeover of Room Three on Friday 16th May we’re archiving a Dusk & Blackdown set that was recorded live at Reconstrvct in New York a month or so back. It’s a driving example of the way they play when in front of a reactionary crowd and it proves to be the perfect pace marker for next week when Dusk and Blackdown will be joined by LV and Joshua Idehen, Wen, Sully, E.M.M.A, Etch and Parris up in Room Three…

Listen, DaveQ and Funafuji are visionaries. 

Their 2 hour b2b set for XVIII didn't just expand whatever boundaries one might expect to hear from such a farseeing duo, it tore them clear out the frame. Recorded live in Brooklyn April 26th, 1984 at another unauthorized Reconstrvct, yes we're pleased the cops didn't come despite the dunkin donuts just a few hundred feet away from tsunami's lab horn stacks, but we're most pleased Dave and Safiya come thru and let us record and share this extrasensory set for more than just one night. 

Rest In Peace DJ Rashad, another visionary who's music can't be faded.

Claude Speeed returns to Planet Mu, two years after the 'Sun Czar Temple' EP, with his second album 'Infinity Ultra'. He describes the record he's been creating since he started making computer music as one "conceiving an interior territory: an abstract space to process the oppression, confusion and insanity of the contemporary age; and to formulate an honest emotional and artistic response - a psychic jumping off point into an uncertain future." 
 
'Infinity Ultra' takes inspiration from sleep paralysis, monumental artworks, children’s anime, abandoned places, ghostly rave pasts and terrifying silicon valley futures, and the limitless anger of the digital present.
 
These influences have been channelled into an impressionistic burst of varied creativity: Shimmering VSTs; monolithic noise; euphoric blocks of colourful sound; trance stabs and the citrus rush of hardcore; towering drones, and skynet math rock – all rendered against cold, sinister space and nostalgic synth melodies.
 
The album reveals the artist’s Scottish roots, viewed at a hazy distance from his Berlin home - a series of memories of Glasgow’s experimental psychedelic underground, its DIY rock scene and defiant club hedonism. These genre relationships are blurred and at times they contrast with audible brutality; the result is a hybrid, sculptured way of rendering music – minimal specifics, maximum emotions.
