Lafayette Cemetery #1 is one of many small cemeteries embedded in New Orleans neighborhoods.  This particular cemetery takes up one square city block in the city's Garden District neighborhood.  It is located directly across from Commander's Palace restaurant.  Inside the dingy white retaining walls you'll find avenues of crumbling crypts and aged stone monuments all shaded by the enormous spreading arms of lazy old Live Oak trees.  Even though the sounds of traffic and local canines can sometimes intrude on the tranquil rest of the residents, the retaining walls do provide a peaceful seclusion from the daily hustle and bustle of New Orleans for those who choose to linger in the shade for just a while.

Thurmond, WV was once a thriving railroad town along the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway.  The town sits in the New River Gorge on a small spit of land that hugs the bank of the New River on one side and the wall of the ridge that reaches more than 1000 ft. up on the other.  The CSX train tracks run right along Main Street; right through the center of the abandoned town.  Today much of Thurmond is owned by the National Park Service.  I made this recording early one warm, spring morning by the old coal tower at the end of town.  The roar you hear is not traffic, but the sound of the New River churning nearby.

Swan's Island is a large, irregularly shaped, remote island located at the head of Merrymeeting Bay off the coast of Maine near Bar Harbor on Mount Desert Island.  The island can only be reached by ferry. The year round population is about 350 people,  and lobstering is the main occupation.  This recording was made high up on one of the central hills near the quarry and over looking the harbor below.
