Ozie Cargile's "Creation of The Universe" {2002} is a verismo showpiece for Orchestra.  In only 10 minutes, it is a FANTASTIC audio visual TRAVELOGUE through time and space.
In it are traces of elements reminding one of Disney's 1940 Fantasia with its canon like use of JS Bach that expands from strings to winds and brass to moments that evoke "A Short Ride in A Fast Machine" by John Adams.   One of the most important works YET TO BE WIDELY PERFORMED and CELEBRATED written by a contemporary African American composer.  I am proud to champion it.  THIS MUST BECOME CANON in Orchestra repertoire

Doggett was the orchestra's first Black pre concert lecturer.  Doggett talks about the history of black culture in Black composer music for the program's works-Carlos Simon-"Amen", Florence Price, Symphony#3 and the significance of MARIAN ANDERSON and Conductor Pierre Monteux in San Francisco Symphony history 1937-1945. Known as "The Goddess of The Waters" aria from Amistad, this is a critical aria performed spectacularly by the renowned Mezzo Soprano, Florence Quivar that speaks to the trauma of her character,"Yemeya", The Yoruba Goddess of The Waters who witnesses in horror the tragedy of the Transatlantic Slave Ship Holocaust..... captured Africans who escape by suicide by jumping overboard or thrown overboard by the ship owners after they have suffered disease or death on the months long passage known as "The Middle Passage".  The searing text is by Thulani Davis.
This is from the world premiere in 1997 of the opera at Lyric Opera  of Chicago.
