A very special episode this week is coming from Leeds based DJ and producer Nick J. Smith and is dedicated to the original sunset maestro and true Ibiza Legend - José Padilla. José's sunset sets at the Café Del Mar served as the basis for the wildly popular mix series of the same name, while his marathon ten-hour sets, spanning funk, soul, jazz, disco, and rock, were key in the invention of Balearic beat. His music touched the lives of a million souls and will stay with us forever. Thank you Jose Padilla for all those beautiful moments of love!

Hailing from Leeds in the UK, Nick J. Smith has spent the last 20 years immersed in the city’s underground scene. DJing and hosting parties across the city, playing nights, festivals up and down the country.
Consequently playing to dance floors in Europe, such as Renate in Berlin, Powerhouse in Moscow, Stalingrad in Paris, and Electric Elephant in Croatia. Nick has always consciously embraced the musical cooking pot and its many influences, never pigeonholing himself to one style of music. Maintaining this as an ethos for when playing to a dance floor, Nick never sticks to one musical genre for too long, preferring to mix things up whenever possible. This thirst for consuming many musical influences, can be also seen in Nick’s productions and label releases via, Is It Balearic?, Red Laser Records, Spirit Soul Music, Mora Music, Nu Northern Soul, and most recently on Clandestino’s Label with his ‘You Make Me Feel’ EP. In which he explores his love for Italian Dream House of the late eighties and early nineties.

As part of Clandestino, Nick has also seen worthy attention through the Clan’s music productions, record label, podcast, and radio show hosted on KMAH Leeds. Holding regular parties in Leeds, including their ALFOS night, which has now become an essential part of the Leeds clubbing calendar.
Nick also has an ongoing monthly DJ mix series named ‘Chance to Dance’ which is gathering pace and attention. Delving into the depths of his musical love affair. Showcasing his passion and talent for creating a musical journey.

Co-producing under the name Tokyo Black Star he has released original material on the Berlin-based labelInnervisions, as well as on the label Reincarnation by Italian tastemakers Slam Jam, Kerri Chandler’s label Basemental and has remixed for such legendary artists Tony Allen, & Carl Craig. Alex is one of the resident DJs at Berlin’s infamous Cocktail d'amore and for the Aquarian Shift party at club OHM. 
The world famous label relaunched digitally and physically from Berlin in the Fall 2019. Be on the lookout for new original music, compilation projects and collaborations by Alex as well as some new Tokyo Black Star projects in 2021!

Our series does not stop and we are delighted to host an artist who is the pioneer of a genre. Pioneer of a completely new dance, for what were the notes to accompany it, the protagonists of the rhythm, the social context, the scenarios. It was 1987 when the British Nancy Noise, Paul Oakenfold, Danny Rampling, Nicky Holloway, Johnny Walker and company gathered on the same island to dance to the same revolutionary music. They called it Balearic Beat but no one has ever really managed to give a definition to that sound that was proposed every summer by Alfredo Fiorito, and our host Leo Mas, Dj Cesar De Melero, Dj Pippi, Dj Nelo, ... What was sure is that back in London, they couldn't stop talking about it. Of its majestic dawns, of great parties, of Amnesia, of Ku and of Glory's, of pure hedonism, of its colors. Between 1987 and 1988, Ibiza was the hippest thing in Europe. In this regard, Josè Padilla expressed himself: "the hippie spirit is basic because it is inspired by the simplest values to which the natural instinct introduces us, such as the open air, the moon, the stars, dance and good music: the island of Ibiza is summed up in all this ”. It is this essence that gave the name of "Second Summer of Love" to that magical summer of 1988, heir to that of San Francisco dated 1967, when the young American generation decided to rebel against the conflict in Vietnam through peace, love and music.
