Joe McPhee's powerful volume of work dating over 50 years has inspired and directed many artists and listeners to new ways of hearing and thinking. It is not uncommon to hear of someone recalling their first time listening to Joe's work and identifying that moment as a turning point. His passionate message is the real deal whether it comes out on any saxophone, cornet or valve trombone. 

During this program we explore his music from the beginning of his career up to a few recent releases along with some great biographical anecdotes.

Ava Mendoza Interview on Something Else KBGA

My interview with the violinist Mark Feldman (NY/Chicago) originally aired April 14 2021. We discuss his solo violin release Sounding Point on Intakt Records. 

Sounding Point is Mark's second solo violin release which follows Music For Violin Alone released in 1995.

Mark's unique musical experiences from his time as a musician in Chicago, Nashville and New York all contribute to how Sounding Point came to be. His skill on the violin and as a focused improviser are the result of years of hard work and reflection. 

You have likely heard Mark's work, especially if you are a listener to anything out of Nashville in the 1980s. He has worked with many notable artists such as Sylvie Courvoisier, John Abercrombie, Muhal Richard Abrams, Dave Douglas, John Zorn and many others.

My conversation with the musician, composer and multiple reed man, Ken Vandermark. Originally broadcasted on June 30, 2020. 

Ken's presence and influence in the global avant-garde, free jazz and improvisational based musics is well known, well respected and treasured. He is extremely driven with his craft and has continued to push and evolve, thereby always aiming to be true to himself and continuing to create sounds that are unique to himself and those he works with.

He is also selfless in his advocacy of creative artists to have more time and means to do what they need to do, which is to create. A key example is the Catalytic Sound Cooperative, which Ken speaks about here.

Ken leads by example as an artist, a steward of the arts and is always quick to recognize the unique individual contributions of other artists. It was a tremendous pleasure to have time to speak with him.
