Beatservice Records welcome back Third Attempt with his stunning new EP, the effervescent Norwegian artist working his compositional magic across four gorgeously compelling tracks on 'Soul Lifting'.

Torje Fagertun Spilde's productions crafted under the Third Attempt moniker have been steadily turning heads since they began appearing in 2018. Now a cherished member of the Beatservice Records family, the skilled creator has proven himself one of the most inspired artists to have emerged from Norway's rich, meta-disco lineage in recent times. Effortlessly gliding through styles and genres, his distinctive sound expertly blends nu-disco, funk, trip-hop, electronica and house, with his compositional prowess helping to set him apart from the field.

Opening cut 'Luv Star' finds him in typically inspired form. Imaginatively skirting stylistic boundaries, he demonstrates his flair for sampling as he elegantly layers atmospheric vocal chops and dexterous musical refrains. Unfolding over a sprightly broken rhythm, summery chords are embellished by carefree horns and strings as hypnotic guitar and sparkling keys augment the feel-good groove.

Next, 'Keep Your Head Up' once again demonstrates Spilde's flair for sampling, as crafty hip-hop vocals and dexterous scratches dart over soothing keys, ethereal strings and atmospheric horns. Supported by thick bass and rolling breaks, the arrangement elegantly unfolds as soulful vocals add mystique to the groove, the smokey aesthetic equally suitable for at-home meditations and backroom jamming.

Continuing the soul-heavy flex, the heartfelt refrains of 'This Love' see searing vocals and whispered words float across a life-affirming musical bed. Sparkling keys saunter over seductive chords as crisp, broken drums carry the groove, the immersive musicality demonstrating Spilde's flair for constructing powerfully affecting melodies.

'Believe' sees out the collection with a club-focused thrust, the sumptuous track combining harmonic allure with a stirring tempo that's ripe for blissful dance abandon. Classic disco guitar licks saunter over celestial strings and emotive piano chords, the soul-rich vocal embellishing the intoxicating melodies as crisp house drums power the rhythm. As ever, the music is produced to perfection, the arrangement poised to ignite the floor.

Cult sensation Gloria Ann Taylor, who in the early 1970s laid the groundwork for much of disco, R&B, and modern soul as we know it, sees her posthumous release 'Be Worthy' reimagined by renowned producers Flying Mojito Bros into a euphoric, gospel-piano-house-esque West Coast disco cruiser.

"What an honor it is to have been invited to remix the work of such an important and innovative heritage artist" say the duo. "We wish we'd have had the opportunity to chat with and learn from Gloria herself. This remix is our small contribution and dedication to a towering musical legacy of talent, guts and pioneering genre-crossing. Viva Gloria!"

The record looks as good as it sounds too, with Flying Mojito Bros art-directing a colorful and cosmic reimagining of the original cover via illustration wizard Nick Potts, reflecting the bros’ transplantation of Gloria's soul diva spirit into their own southwestern desertscape dreamworld.

Speaking of which, the pair are still shaking Californian dirt from their boots after a hugely successful recent tour of the golden state – highlights of which include pumping out 100% FMB Refritos to 5000 revellers at Diplo's electronic Honky Tonk at Stagecoach Festival (the country music Coachella), DJing back-to-back with Diplo himself at his album launch and frenzying up the floor for man of the moment DJ Seinfeld – while playing shows to fans new and old across LA, Palm Springs, Joshua Tree, Santa Barbara and San Francisco.

A string of popular releases already in 2023 adds further momentum to Flying Mojito Bros' continued rise. Collaborating with honey-bear soul supremo James Alexander Bright, 'Mirage In The Mojave' is an album of reworks on !K7 Records that elevates tracks from the multi-hyphenate artist's back catalog into vibrant disco-chug territory, FMB-style. Milano-based producer Eluard graces Slow Motion Records once again with his debut album ‘Dirty Hall’. A release filled with his distinctively nostalgic tone, blending West Coast synth funk and Italo Disco with appropriate, seamless grit.

‘Dirty Hall’ opens with ‘Die Erste Musik’,  a chiming track with a wide, captivating vocal sampler riff that delicately dances off fizzing percussion. Creamy, glistening chords sit beautifully within this arrangement effortlessly complementing the bassline. This approach is taken a step further in the following ‘Carlo E Daria’, with an instantly attention-grabbing swirling synth motif.

‘Dirty Hall’ shows the breadth of Eluard's innate talent for harnessing the best out of the analogue machine, creating a rich sonic palette that never fails to warm the ears. The thundering lows of ‘Comic Bad’ are met with a mind-bending augmented synth line and a beautifully enigmatic vocal riff.

Eluard’s sound design throughout this LP masterfully pushes the retro into the present realm, retaining the characterful intrigue of the instruments recorded. Intelligently placed harmonies in ‘Dancers Are Thin And Pretty’ and ‘Funny Jasmine’ help to raise the instrumental sequences, allowing the listener to be transported to a more reflective, existential space.

The slick flare of elegant floor filler ‘Phonemes’ solidifies Eluard as a visionary within the Italian Dance Wave Movement, layering distinguished instrumentals with perfectly placed melodics.

‘Dirty Hall’ eloquently concludes with the sophisticated sleaze of ‘In The Next Room’. A masterful nod to the golden era of the vocoder with a stomping, percussive groove and a cleansing chordal sequence. ‘Dirty Hall’ is an LP charged with a mind-bending evocation instilling Eluard as a forward-thinking force within the sonic sphere.

Sacha Distel - Le Bateau Blanc (Billy Idle's Cosmo Re-Edit)

Billy Idle is a resident DJ and promoter of @discobizarre, the weekly disco dancefloor at Berlin's KitKatClub. Our current focus is on 70's disco and 80's HiNRG… in the past decade Billy had specialized on 80's edits and ran a radio show on TWENFM. Billy still produces nearly one edit a day, but they are not available from soundcloud. If you're interested, get in touch using the website's contact form. Billy is miserably bad at checking mail on soundcloud. Catch him on Telegram instead. Also if you want your tracks to be played at Disco Bizarre. Disco Bizarre has also started its own label and was just about to publish Billy's first vinyl EP when the Corona virus came! After a bit we published it anyway.

Summer 2020 and 2021 saw Billy performing in parks, beer gardens and live streams (check out the youtube link) rather than in clubs. Subscribe to his newsletter, or invite him over. Tempelhof airport saw a lot of spontaneous bluetooth disco workouts.

Billy started routinely producing 80s' edits around 2010… the tracks typically maintain the sounds of the originals but adopt a more modern dramaturgy, suitable for beatmatched mixing (which until then was uncommon with music from the 80s). More instrumental parts, more time for the audience to tune into the song before the singing starts, if it starts at all.
