A live improvisation with the modded version of our SphereTones instrument. It is a visual instrument where sounds can be created by arranging moving spheres around on a canvas-like space. The body of the instrument is the interface itself. The appearance is functional, spatial relationships and the visible field are defining the sonic process. In contrast to traditional composition methods this approach places intuition, randomness and playfulness in the focus of attention.

We are using a modified sound engine for this particular performance where the sequenced sounds are being sculpted and transformed using several live, algorithmic sonic processes.

The performance was a piece of the "Dirty Ear Forum" presented by Ny Musikk Bergen & KHiB, developed as part of the Nordic Sound Art Program.

Echo is a listening machine. It represents anonymous Wikipedia edits made by governmental institutes of different countries. A few twitter bots are observing the IP addresses of Wikipedia article editors and once these edits are made from governmental addresses, the system notifies this event to the audience: it makes a sound along a visual sign on a map. The title of the installation reflects onto these - originally unintended - sounds made by the editors, but Echo is also the name of a basic command in different operating systems that is used to display textual content on the screen, or save it to a file. The visual appearance of the installation is inspired by early radio systems that have names of cities and different frequency ranges indicated on them. It also merits from the activities of amateur (and pirate) radio activities by transforming those concepts into the digital domain. Users can “tune” between different bot sonifications by rotating a knob, this act is similar to the search for meaningful information on those original radio appliances. The sound synthesis is structured as a flux of material, similar to a waterfall: the initial white noise serves as the source for all sounds. Later on it is filtered several times within several cycles and patterns. Sounds are flowing and traveling through these tiny paths, streams and branches based on random probabilities to reach their final destination: the speakers.
