Jonathan Kaspar has that rare, instinctive ability to germinate the seed of an idea and nurture it to its logical conclusion, both melodically and sonically. It’s why his stock has been rising so sharply in recent years with future classics already released on Kompakt and Objektivity to name but two, and he’s at it again on his debut EP for Cocoon Recordings with three distinctive tracks of sublime quality.
The first cut, Invert Drift, is also a phenomenal mixing tool. What starts off as an expectant minimal groove suddenly explodes with wild, cascading effects that hit you out of nowhere. Any DJ worth their salt will get tons of twisted pleasure orchestrating the crowd‘s synaptic meltdown with this one, but there‘s so much more going on behind the calculated mayhem. In true signature style Kaspar teases the listener, cranking up the pressure with a dark, brooding synth progression that lurks under the surface but never quite breaks free, leaving the morphing bass line, crunchy top loop and laser guided FX front and center. As it reaches its climax it’s like being caught in the crossfire of a Battlestar Galactia shoot out.
Last Romance is another master class in how to hypnotize the dance floor, this time by showering it in ecstasy. The patient, Latin-inflected build up accompanies a discordant metallic synth line that from hesitant beginnings slowly grows to dominate the track. It resonates beautifully almost creating its own language before deep, lush chords and a crystalline arp line flesh out the breakdown, making the hairs on your neck stand to attention.
Coming in at just over ten minutes, Off The Shore introduces a different aspect of Kaspar’s repertoire. With ambient, cinematic overtones and an otherworldly central motif that starts folding space in the extended breakdown, it’s a perfect early morning tonic that leads you off the beaten track, but still carries enough weight to keep the dance floor ticking over nicely.

For The Alpha State's 10th anniversary, Biotop re-issues the very first album from label boss Patrick Zigon. The Alpha State was supposed to be the first release on Biotop in 2010, but was then released in 2011 on the Slovenian label Danza Macabra, in order to honor Zigon's Slovenian roots. Now, exactly 10 years later, it's time to come full circle and bring The Alpha State home. The 10th Anniversary Edition contains the full-length album, the continuous mix, and remixes by Mihai Popoviciu, (never-to-be-forgotten) Pascal FEOS & Frank Leicher, Himan, Till Krüger, Alessandro Crimi, Francesco Bonara, Dixie Yure, Muk.ti and Fog, partly remastered and mesmerizing as ever.

"The Alpha State is a mental state of total relaxation. It is reached short before and after sleep and when daydreaming, but can also be entered at will, for example via hypnotizing music. Being mentally fully present, this state of consciousness opens the door to our subconsciousness, leaves us in pure harmony and may even allow higher levels of creativity."

Patrick Zigon’s The Alpha State is a hypnotic guide through his deep and colourful world of electronic music. After many years of a heavy schedule full of releases and remixes, Patrick took a time-out, locked himself into his studio to reinvent himself and put all of his new energy and creativity into his very first artist album. More than one year of hard work, sleepless nights and extensive sound design result in a thrilling journey of overall 12 tracks, and the continuous mix - an idea of Patrick’s since the start of the production process. Twelve tracks, each standing on their own, each one with its own meaning, perfectly mixed into one big story. Call it Patrick’s first intentional musical monument. Adding substantial character to the release are six musical collaborations from diverse non-electronic guest musicians invited to Patrick’s Traumraum studio to pair their talents with his infectious electronic grooves. The dope Ragga vibes of Caramelo Criminal, the captivating vocals of Cassis, the muted trumpet of Fugatocity, the tricky live drums of The DisDrumMachine, the German voice of Goldkehlchen and the dark vocals of Paulo Olarte paired with Patrick‘s production skills make this album the most artistic piece of music in his release- catalog so far.

Davide Squillace’s This And That Lab welcomes back the Italoboyz whose two original tracks on this EP are made in collaboration with Blind Minded, and come complimented with a remix by Matteo Spedicati. Also on the EP is a track by Marco Donato, who is one half of the Italoboyz’ working under his solo alias Durant.

Originally from Italy but currently residing between London and Berlin, the Italoboyz are a duo consisting of the aforementioned Marco Donato and Federico Marton, whose clued-up house and techno sounds have brought them to esteemed labels such as Moon Harbour, Saved Records, Get Physical, Crosstown Rebels and their own label Superfiction Recordings.

Blind Minded, alongside solo releases on Jambutek Recordings, Natural Rhythm and Trapez Ltd has previously collaborated with the Italoboyz, compiling EP's for Oblack Label and Deeperfect among others.

Providing the solo remix, Matteo Spedicati dropped an EP on This And That in 2018, and also a collaboration with Frank Storm as part of VA. This time working on his own, other labels to have also featured his music include Hot Creations, Amam and Great Stuff Recordings.

“Back To Paradise” is first up. Focused around a tropical guitar riff, it’s also wrapped in stripped back percussion with flickers of delay and building effects. Sensual and hypnotic, this understated cut has a sophistication that many will find appealing.

Matteo Spedicati provides the second track with his remix of "Back To Paradise" that draws attention to the drums. Using the guitar as more of an ambient texture, this version has a chunky groove that’s tailored for plays on a club sound system.

“Melodia di Sogni nel Vento”, produced in tandem with hang instrument percussionist Paolo Borghi, is a track that’s all about subtlety, with each change small but timed to perfection. The steel drums that flow freely are almost cinematic, and the expertly sequenced percussion compliments them perfectly.

Closing the EP is the trippy vocals and wonky bassline of Durant’s “Ska!”, which also has filtered chord chops played on a guitar in the style commonly associated with Ska music, and has been appropriately titled to show this fusing of genres. Warped and brimming with individuality, the murky atmosphere of this minimal cut - a solo contribution from Marco under his Durant alias - showcases everything the Italoboyz are known for.

Crosstown Rebels welcome Tochno Techno label owner Yulia Niko to release her first full EP, Paradise, a captivating three track EP featuring jazz bossanova vocalist Sil Romero and Italian talent Cioz on remix duty. 

Opening track Caminando encapsulates Yulia’s inspiration from walking on the White Isle of Ibiza where she spent the last year living. The hypnotising deep house melody of swirly synth pads and Sil Romero’s beautiful dreamy vocals wash over skipping percussion in an emotive composition. Cioz puts his own melodic stamp on the remix, creating a progressive club piece with bright keys over a reshaped bass line.  Paradise continues the warm, ethereal atmosphere of the EP, bongos dance on hats as lush, relaxing tones fade in and out. 

Russian-born DJ, producer and label owner, Yulia Niko learned her trade in the clubs of her hometown before moving to the US to work as a resident DJ at Verboten, Brooklyn and Heart in Miami. Now touring the world, she is based in Berlin and runs a vinyl only label, Tochno Techno. She has also released on other esteemed labels such as Get Physical Music, Nervous, Heisenberg, Natura Viva and Dee-P-erfect.

Returning to Steve Bug’s Sublease label, buraq drops two new heaters on the Scream & Shout release. The DJ, composer and producer from Zurich, Switzerland roars back with the follow up to I Don’t (2019) and Untold (2020) that dropped to great acclaim. 

Title track Scream & Shout is a vibey deep burner - a solid kick is teased in and out, while crisp 808 percussion brings the groove. There’s a juicy, old school Kerri Chandler vibe to the track with a mutating synth lead and vocal sample. 

Hey Hey treads a similar path - a deep and slinky groove gets under the skin and brings back the yearning for basement dancefloors - it’s two note melody is classic Chicago house and a timely reminder of better days.
