Birds is the musical project of UK born, Netherlands based DJ Katie Wilkinson. Her music is a melting pot of Techno, 90s acid, Electro and 80’s EBM and New Wave, with her more recent material also incorporating more bass heavy sounds. She has released on labels such as Höga Nord, Ombra International, NEIN, Freeride Millennium, Hard Fist and Samo Records before founding her own label Feed The Void, a label which aims to showcase her eclectic tastes. 

2024 also saw the release of her first full length LP and the return of her infamous live sets, as well as her music being remixed by the likes of Ben Pest, Poly Chain, Borusiade and more.

As a DJ, as well as through her music she exercises a never ending desire to explore sonic possibility and switch up genres continuously. Her sets reflect these curiosities and have an extremely transcendent nature to them; you never know whether you'll find yourself dancing to churning low tempo industrial techno, high octane acid bass lines, Italo, experimental Breaks or something far and between these things. Nothing is too weird or intense for a Birds DJ set. 

She has a monthly radio show on Netil Radio (the fourth Tuesday of the month 5pm-7pm), which is a residency that she's had for the past six and a half years and is a regular face on local radio station, Operator. She has also played everywhere from Melbourne, to Mexico City, to Zagreb and many more locations around the world, sharing line-ups with the likes of Boys Noize, Pablo Bozzi, Jennifer Touch, Kris Baha, Marie Pravda, Ivna Ji, Martial Canterel, Perel & more.

Rotterdam-based record label Feed The Void line up 'Space Transmissions', the latest transmission from label founder and producer Birds...Our pick 'Wicked Games', opens like a scrambled transmission from deep space oscillating between slow motion dubstep and hypnotic percussion loops. Greasy acid lines snake their way through thick clouds of vaporous drone. Birds’ voice hovers like a ghost in the signal, suspended in the collapse of human civilisation.

Rotterdam via London based producer and Feed The Void label head Birds returns to her own label with a brand new EP ‘Space Transmissions From A Cruel World’, a bass heavy ode to the sad state of Planet Earth.

Opener ‘Wicked Games’ is as sub filled builder; the distorted acid line contrasting to the lower frequencies and cutting through strong on a layer of vocal samples and Birds’ own vocal.

‘Save Humanity. Forget Authority’ is a breakbeat number with a kick that packs a punch. The track’s message is clear: the world is in crisis and humanitarianism is coming second to authoritarianism and greed.

‘Brug Open, Motor Af’ is an homage to The Netherlands and the Zuid-Holland West Coast sound that brought her here. One of the samples you hear is the monotonous drone of the Rotterdam’s Mathenessebrug opening whilst the vocal is suitably vocoder heavy. This contrasts to the chopped up Drill vocal sample that works as base for the track and adds a melancholic and serious feel to it. Beat wise, it’s as Electro as it gets with her signature 303 making an appearance mid way through the track.

‘It’s A Long Way To Go (To Escape The Human Race)’ is an Amen Breaks track whilst the simple 3 note lead line gives it a mild 80s pop-esque feel, contrasting greatly to to the sub-y Drum n Bass style bass line. This track is an immediate snap shot into the multiple genres that inspire the artist.

‘Shake Things Up’ builds and drops through sonic layering, the way a shoe-gaze track might but is still essentially a Bass music track that lyrically questions life’s unspoken rules and expectations.

‘Space Transmissions From A Cruel World’ is probably Birds’ most musically ambitious record yet and one that fully incorporates her sonic pallet and the wild journey you might find yourself on during one of her DJ sets, whilst also acting as a social commentary. It has a unique-ness that’s often missing within the dance music industry.

UK born, Netherlands based artist Birds is a bit of a legend both in front of and behind the scenes of the music industry. With almost 15 years experience behind the decks, an eclectic record collection and an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of music, she also has a history of playing in guitar bands and has been an active part of the nightlife community for all of her adult life both in London and throughout the Netherlands, particularly in her current home of Rotterdam. 

She’s carved out a name for herself curating, managing and producing events at some of the countries’ finest venues and festivals already during the first two years of her life in The Netherlands, with her own record label Feed The Void also gathering support from world famous DJs throughout its (less than) 3 year existence. 

Her own music incorporates her diverse tastes with punky vocal led Acid Techno and Electro at the forefront and has released on labels such as Absorb Emit, Samo, Freeride Millennium, Ombra International, Höga Nord and more. Over the years she’s played everywhere from Melbourne, to Mexico City, to Zagreb as well as regularly at her home bases of The UK and The Netherlands, sharing line-ups with artists such as Boys Noize, Pablo Bozzi, Mad Miran, Alberta Balsam, Perel, Zohar, Annie Hall and more, whilst her tracks have had the remix treatment from the likes of Poly Chain, Ben Pest and Jerome Hill. 

As well as guest mixing and performing live regularly for the platforms such as Rinse FM, Operator, Future Intel and Balamii, she’s also been a part of the original Netil Radio show residents, playing herself every month and also curating a series of guests for her show for the last seven years.
