In the mid-90's, our house was always playing The Violin Player, by Vanessa-Mae on loop. With memories of her tracks dancing in the back of my head, I played with a collection of semi-random orchestral and vocal samples to pulled together this techno-pop-classical mix. 

This one is definitely an experiment, so would love to hear what you think.

Scherzo

This track was a journey, and I think the title fits it well. I wanted to try something *different*, and so started with a sadder, more dissonant sound, but it was pulled back towards hopeful again and again.

The process reminded me of the poem "Dreams" by Langston Hughes. Originally published in 1923 it speaks to the the sustaining power of dreams, particularly in the face of difficult realities. It's an urgent warning to never let dreams die.

Which seemed fitting for a track where I was trying to push into something new.

Langston Hughes was an American poet, activist, and writer and challenged a myriad of norms. He was one of the inventors of jazz poetry, some biographers believe he was homosexual, and from 1942 to 1962, as the civil rights movement was gaining traction, he wrote a weekly column in a leading black newspaper. He's worth learning more about.

Hold Fast To Dreams

We all have that track we can't get out of our head - for me it's Sébastien Léger's Kanga. I first heard it as part of David Hôhme's 2019 Bubble's & Bass set, and I've been itching to try putting something together that catches a similar vibe.

As I was playing with the bass line, it kept meandering back towards the something like the bass line from Louis Prima's Sing, Sing, Sing. So I went with it.

Space Bass

The idea for this track came from the slogan Fukoku Kyohei (Enrich the Country, Strengthen the Militarization).

From out 1860~1900, as Japan transitioned from the Tokagawa contral to the Meiji era, the country transitioned from an isolationist approach to a rapid pace of change and adopting western approaches. This came along with an increased investment in military.

I tried to weave together more traditional elements (vocals and shamisen from Sumie Kaneko) and more contemporary elements (samples from and MYLK) with military beats and rhythms.

In this mix, was aiming for something reminiscent of an old crooner song being remixed as a deep house track.
