We are excited to present the 19th episode of our podcast series, featuring label boss Phase Fatale. Since 2014, Hayden Payne has redefined techno with his fusion of heavy basslines, hypnotic rhythms, and dark, immersive soundscapes. There’s beauty in chaos and method to madness, that much is true to the work of this faceless duo from Sweden. SHXCXCHCXSH’s strain of anarchic noise has sparked conversations and head-spinning records ever since the two producers first swapped notes in 2009. For about a decade, Hannes Stenström and Emmanuel Pascal Moreno stayed out of the public eye as a matter of principle, stripping music to its very base, without the weight of prejudice and social context holding it back: ’we prefer to listen to music in the dark, preferably without knowing who made it, when or how’. From the chaos and their loyalty to instinct came the need to find new structures, and so their faceless records united around a theme or musical element. It was a gamble, but their sledgehammer destruction of techno conventions gave some of the most intriguing sounds of the 2010s. Sampling everything from podcasts to YouTube to field recordings, they’re always on the hunt for ‘in-between’, ‘unintentional’ details, a way to composite the strangest and most innovative techno out there. Their staggering releases on Avian pioneered new sounds (and track names), and successfully manufactured the type of music you could hear both at home and in clubs; and 2024 saw them resurrect their Rösten imprint with the release of DO, an infernal four-tracker made for the dancefloor. Bassiani Podcast 257 explores that format further, bringing their stabbing and psychedelic havoc to a crowd facing setting. Immersive and heavy-duty, this one’s an hour-long clip of their snake-pit percussions, mind-bending techno from the enigmatic Norrköping duo.

French-born, Tbilisi-based Ina Kacz is a DJ and producer whose vision far exceeds the limitations of a genre, including one as multi-faceted as techno. Her shape-shifting sets span a wide spectrum of styles and sub-divisions, flourishing somewhere at the junction of acid-drenched cycloramas, chiselled ambient breaks, twilight dubs and chrome-coated industrialism. With her exquisitely fine touch and impeccable understanding of the groove, the French artist pulls out a two-hour jaunt into her pulsating headspace, packed to the rafters with streamlined style collision, inch-perfectly engineered plot twists and hair-raising momentums.

For the second edition of BASEMENT’s Archives series, we’re sharing this outstanding recording of Nebbieri from the venue’s 6th anniversary party on April 26th, 2025.

Nebbieri is a resident of Bassiani - a club with close ties to BASEMENT - and as such has always shared a special connection with the room. Playing alongside MARRØN and LYDO, Nebbieri delivered a proper journey set. At times, she opens up a portal to spacious, soaring techno, elsewhere submerging the mix in pure filth. The anniversary parties are always standouts, and Nebbieri took the room over the top with this one.

BITE is the Berlin-based techno label co-founded by Hayden Payne (aka Phase Fatale) in 2018. Beginning with the debut collaborative EP by Silent Servant & Phase Fatale, the label aims to platform artists who operate outside the conventional preconceptions of techno and are united by an ambition to push the boundaries of electronic music. This drive is further exemplified by regular showcases at renowned institutions Berghain, Basement, and Tbilisi’s KHIDI as well as a multitude of clubs throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

With a vast artist roster from stalwarts such as Ron Morelli and Teste to contemporary talent from the likes of Pablo Bozzi and Gael, the eclectic variety of releases touches upon a range of styles along the moodier fringes of electronic music. BITE has proved itself as the imprint to watch. Fresh off the heels of their 5 year anniversary in 2023 culminating in the acclaimed triple LP compilation ‘Shedding Skin,’ BITE moves into more dancefloor territory with their next releases by label head Phase Fatale and remixes by Rrose. The display of the music is also represented in its visual prowess with cutting designs and colorways intended to take the sound into another dimension. From proper techno to synthpunk and to sparse minimalist industrial, BITE never fails to deliver fresh and razor-sharp sounds tying together the narrative of dance music.
