I LOVE Margie, so very much. And only just stumbled upon this track from her self title Margie LP a couple of months back. Some lovely production but not quite what it takes for most dance floors and NOWHERE NEAR LONG ENOUGH.

As always I've tried to show maximum love for the original, just wanted to toughen up those beats and hear that insanely good chorus a few more times. I hope you enjoy!

Margie Joseph - I Can't Move No Mountains (Scrimshire Edit)

This collection of underground dance music covers tracks released between 1975 and 1983 from both sides of the Atlantic. The tracks chosen for this compilation introduce some of the pioneering few who expanded the horizons of disco to incorporate elements of dub, funk, electro, jazz and Latin. In some ways many of the artists featured here foresaw the birth of successive musical genres. There is no disputing that they were all well ahead of their time and with the recent trend of similarly inspired house they sound as fresh today as they did then.

The music chosen for this album were the underground classics that made the scene what it was in the heady of days of the Paradise Garage and the Loft in NYC and the Warehouse in Chicago where DJs such as Arthur Baker and Francois Kervorkian could be heard spinning such tracks.

On disc two (CD version only) Masters at Work add their touches to one of their favourite tracks while Harvey and Underdog take on the Disco Dub band and come up with two very different interpretations which will work on today’s dancefloors.

" Excellent sounding pressing of an impossibly rare LP track, that has never sounded as clear or dynamic as this version. Originally recorded live in the First Baptist Church in Crown Heights, New York City, in 1982 and pressed only for the congregation, Walter Gibbons (owner of Jus Born studios and a new born Christian at the time of the recording) acquired a copy and played it out at the 7th Avenue. Rock & Soul shop were he worked. This was the place where most discerning DJs and soulful dance music aficionados picked up on this new sound, and it quickly became a Garage, Loft and Zanzibar club classic, championed by Larry Levan, David Mancuso and others."

To commemorate the passing of the great jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd today, I'd like to share my edit, originally released on the Editions Disco label, of one of my favorite songs of his - the jazz-funk and breakbeat classic "Think Twice".  Produced by the incomparable Mizell Brothers, it was sampled (and provided the basis) for three straight-up classic records: A Tribe Called Quest's "Footprints", Main Source's "Looking At The Front Door", and Armand Van Helden's house masterpiece "Flowers".

Byrd's records were a gateway for many of us who got into the nascent jazz-funk, rare groove and breakbeat scenes of the 1990s as DJs and collectors.  But his 1970s albums for Blue Note like Street Lady, Places & Spaces, as well as those of his protégés the Blackbyrds, were not just a rich trove of hip-hop samples for the eager beat-digger - they contained great songs that helped us to appreciate jazz as a popular art-form that was still engaged with contemporary soul, funk and R&B music, and encouraged investigating its infinite musical dimensions further.  He was, and is, tremendously important to my development as a DJ and lover of music.  We've lost a giant today.  RIP.
