so much music and noodling to get me to a few notes, and then the lyrics slash voices really carry it. It's all experimenting, but what I'm learning is I'm resisting real songs, but not compensating with ecstasy elsewhere. This one is cool. Somber, and ok.

Another daily track. Took about a day and a half. Started in the car with a 3/4 beat. Any time I try to work with a set rhythm it turns into a bit of a mess. Anyway, here you go!

Yes this is a cover of Silly Little Love Songs. What's wrong with that?

I became fascinated when I heard the demo for this song, with Linda's slight Shaggs-like delivery, and the endless repetition of the overlapping choruses (what's that called?) And after trying to figure out the piano (and now I know what a Fmaj7 is for!) and not trying to get good at it, I put this together still testing positive for Covid from midnight to 2 am one morning.

Love Songs

This one came at midnight, I was exhausted, one of the chords I don't even know what it is, maybe a C#augmented or something, but the others are Am Dm and F#, and the lyrics, as often is the case, are sketched out, then sung in bed, this time while flipping through cards with ideas on them. Also, the Oyster, Crocodile and Elk are a card spread drawn by my friend Lizzie, it suits them awesomely, it's a great draw, I wish my lyrics weren't so improvisational but I still have to keep these kinda quick or I'll never do them. Finished the next day- lyrics chopped up and edited around. I barely remembered making it. 

My one issue- these tracks are all getting too dirgey. Need to find a chorus. 

These songs have been trying to understand what songs are, and I am understanding some things, but others I am stupidly ignoring. IE, gentle, insignificant changes are ok in a short narrative poem, but perhaps more is needed in a 2 1/2 minute song. The most significant changes here are lyrical: the hilt, the goring, the monster, etc. but they aren't enough. 

So: I like this, thanks for listening, but I think I have to explore dynamics more, that's where I hope I'm headed.

The Baby Follows the Oyster

Ok this one started trying to figure out the chords and melody to Nick Drake's Which Will, which of course I couldn't do without the internet (E-B-C#m-F#), but once there, found I could sorta mangle it for my own uses. 

This didn't come together until I added the little bit of percussion in the 2nd half, separating the two sections. Letting this devolve seemed like a bit of worship, I hope this comes through.

The backing track came first here. I had a D guitar chord in that empty space but it sounded too much like the Em so I took it out, had to find something to work with that disappearance. This song is heartfelt, but my inclination to subvert with inelegant language (ie up above, there's a dove, flying above the dirt...) and desire to sing it like I was the guy from Smog came on a little strong. Still, I think there's something to this one.
