Bitter Roots Recordings is proud to present “The Way We Feel,” the debut single from Bozeman, Montana’s Jaque Visser.  While polished tracks and ear-catching tracks are nothing new for Visser considering his production resume as DuBuddha, “The Way We Feel” boldly announces a new stylistic chapter that will only serve to broaden his appeal.  Visser’s emotive vocals take center-stage, utilizing both layered harmonies and creative effects processing to craft a radio-ready slice of indie pop.  Fans nostalgic for early 2010s acts like MGMT and Empire of the Sun will feel right at home, as will those who enjoy current artists like Charlie Puth and James Blake.  

From the opening moments, “The Way We Feel” is a crash course in Visser’s knack for melody.  Rhythmic synthesizer stabs crescendo into an effortless blend of electronic drums and shimmering synthesizers.  Visser’s roots in electronic music are on clear display as saturated strings and reverb-laden filter sweeps blend together in the song’s arrangement, creating exciting dynamic changes that lend a progressive structure to the track.  All of these elements peak in the song’s kinetic 2nd half, the resonant bassline serving as a linchpin as the other elements achieve a climax of rich textures.  The clear result is a sun-soaked anthem for all seasons that hints at even greater music yet to come from Jaque Visser.

Long ago when you were still a child, your mother undoubtedly taught you the importance of making a good first impression.  “When you meet someone for the first time,” she may have said, “be sure to politely introduce yourself.”  This fundamental rule of social etiquette serves as a launchpad into the mind of  Missoula, Montana hip hop artist Drem on “Hello,” his devilish new single released through Bitter Roots Recordings.  Drem is one of the three lyrical personas of Connor Lee Kucera, who also performs as Lou Charismo and Ronnie Knox, and this collaboration with Bitter Roots Recordings founder Hannibal Hayes (Lecture) is the ideal entry point into the sly humor and off-kilter musings that are the essence of Drem’s music.  

And what an introduction it is.  From the outset, a vibrant pulse of detuned synthesizers lends “Hello” a sense of urgency. The driving rhythm of the drums, paired with a saw bassline creates a warped energy that serves as the perfect backdrop for Drem’s detached and measured delivery.  “I’m Drem; you love me” Kucera asserts on the track’s chorus, his tone of voice  leaving no room for objection or argument.  Moments later, the affection is reciprocated: “I’m your best friend.”  It’s the effortlessness of Kucera’s flow that glues these disparate elements together, highlighting Drem’s wry wit without ever winking to the camera.  “Hello” makes one thing about Drem crystal clear: he intends to keep you on your toes.

Utilizing the eponymous beacon as a symbolic touchstone for both music and lyrics, “Lighthouse” is the highly-anticipated debut single from Missoula, Montana’s Saylor Beauchamp, available from Bitter Roots Recordings.  Though Saylor and Bitter Roots Recordings founder Hannibal Hayes (Lecture) have previously collaborated on tracks such as “Strange World,” released under the artist name Sh, this stands apart as the first solo vocal performance for Saylor.  “Lighthouse” confidently eschews the bright energy of such earlier releases and plunges deep into atmospheric textures, delicately composed around the intimacy and emotion in the as-yet most inspired performance of Saylor’s catalog.  

Perhaps the most distinctive draw of “Lighthouse” comes from the song’s subtle blend of musical styles.  The synthesized bassline gently transforms behind drums that lightly swing in a rhythm most-often found in the jazz or RnB genres, and occasional guitar flourishes provide brighter melodies that draw the listener in close.  And this very gravitational pull emphasizes the true center of the song: the tender and solicitous emotion in Saylor’s voice.  Beauchamp effortlessly imbues this sparse ballad with a wistful melancholy, her lyrics providing fragmented glimpses into much deeper desires.  “Lighthouse” thrives in expressing such complex feelings of love, hinting at deeper meanings and passions while never revealing such secrets.

It's said that a good magician never reveals their tricks; likewise, such tricks are often kept up the sleeves of the aforementioned magic user.  Idioms about magic aside, there are perhaps few musicians capable of the kind of electronic wizardry offered by Nerdskull (Hunter Dearing).  On “Introvert,” the latest single from then Missoula, Montana based producer, listeners are treated to yet another effortless blend of styles and textures, the kind of cross-genre experiment that’s played no small part in Dearing’s successful music career and wide-reaching appeal.  

As with the best Nerdskull tracks, “Introvert” exists as a masterclass in the art of blending samples into digitally-engineered music.  The single opens with a naturalistic palette of field recordings, the wind through the trees, the chirping of birds, all accented by Eastern wind chimes and bells.  It’s an engaging and tranquil mood that’s quickly punctuated by the type of dancefloor-energizing groove Dearing’s made his name with.  It’s a song that evokes the very best artists in electronic music, from the late and great stylings of Charles the First to the classic UK dubstep of Burial.  Over three brief minutes, Nerdskull incorporates dizzying bass synthesizers, affected vocals, shifting filtered pads, and nearly every other trick in the book to create a cohesive- and organic- whole.  The resulting single is, to put it mildly, magical.

It’s ironic how fast time goes by yet it can seem like nothing has happened. No progression. You’re still waking up every morning feeling anxious and alone. Perhaps you wake up with the guilt of wasting your 20’s. You had a family member pass away recently or you can't find a stable place to live. Whatever it is, it’s pain. We are all going thorough something. We ask ourselves “when will this ever end?” This winter has been especially hard on me and it seems like it’s been tough for other people in my life too. I’ve had to let go of people I’ve loved. Living alone, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to reflect on myself and talk down on myself. I’ve wanted to die. I’ve had that feeling; it scares me every time. That existential dread that memes attempt to portray on a daily basis, but never make you feel any better about it. I know I’m not alone in this. There’s always someone to talk to. There’s always a friend who will be willing to lend an ear. My first release is about this pain. Whatever your pain is whether it be physical, emotional, spiritual; you’re not alone. Don’t give up. We have to rise up and push harder.
