After years of promoting local artists and creating a vital community of musicians in Western Montana, local legend Hannibal Hayes, better known as the multifaceted lyricist and producer Lecture, has labored tirelessly as founder of Bitter Roots Recordings to continue his cultivation of independent music in the Missoula, Montana scene.  Despite collaborations across multiple genres, the versatility and depth of Hayes’s dark and orchestral compositions have remained mysterious to those unfortunate enough to not bear witness to his dynamic live performances.  It’s a mystery that Lecture’s hotly anticipated releases via the BRR label will soon serve to correct, as Hayes finally takes his much-deserved moment in the spotlight of his own grassroots release schedule.  

To pigeonhole, or merely articulate, Lecture’s textured output is difficult to accomplish in words.  His early catalog has channeled the ragged metal stylings of Lamb of God or the industrial churn of Static-X into electronic and hip-hop production, collaborating with the experimental (and, in the author’s estimation, handsome) likes of Mr. Moo (Milo Hayden).  Such aggressive and headbang-worthy musical dimensions nonetheless incorporate the lyrical dramatics of Tech N9ne, enhanced with the earworm hooks of Timbaland’s most luxurious sounding output.  Utilizing an eclectic knowledge of guitar, keyboards, and symphonic instrumentation in his compositional duties for Bitter Roots Recordings artists Sh, Ramble, and Bohemian Trap City, Lecture’s output strives for the same prodigious accomplishments as Hans Zimmer or Danny Elfman.  It’s little secret why Bitter Roots Recordings has achieved such an immediate and organic rise: community members from all walks of music creation believe in the vision of the project’s leader.  That leader is Hannibal Hayes, but when he’s on stage, you surely know him as none other than Lecture.

Dark sunshine peels open upon crystalline clouds, rays of neon radiation peep through the gaps of reality. All of it happens to a pulsing rhythm, all of it is Old Friend, the latest masterpiece from Sam Forslund.

Forslund is an anomaly, and Old Friend is no different. Forslund’s sonic signature is undeniable, and an anachronism from the typical belief of what comes from Montana. Seething, lapping synth waves, with a punctuated house beat, push against languid electric guitar chords. The entirety of Old Friend morphs and twists, a story of discovery, its vibration conjuring visions of distant lands, and the summit of alien peaks.

Old Friend is a blooming tour-de-force, an experience capable of deep personal solitude, or gaping with a crowd of friends at frenetic lights and lasers blistering over-head. Listen to it, and start history.

The discs of reality come close, and they grind. Matter becomes milled into dark particles. All it takes is an “Ember”, the latest single from Ramble.

Ramble, the experimental side-project from Montana-based Hannibal Hayes, delivers a searing, seething friction of west-coast 808s and bristling bass. Within “Ember” flames slide in zero-g, a liquid fire sticking to everything, licking the edges. 

A strong entry into the west-coast bass world, and another statement as to why Hayes’ Ramble project is one to watch. Their exploration into all avenues of electronic music keeps the listener guessing and cements Ramble as a multi-disciplinary break-out talent.

And wonder why your hashtag heartbroken.

They say – there's 2 sides to every story, 

But they tend to choose the side that benefits their self-absorption; 

Regardless of the facts they all support it and before ya know it, 

They be walking around raving like they were always for it. 

 

Then they get on socials and they floor it, 

They spread misinformation about some shit that they just imported; 

Get called out by the masses and abort it, 

Then play victim and twist it into a wad of knots until they feel important. 

 

Who are they – They the ones be runnin their mouths, 

Been rippin your name to ribbons just to come up from your clout; 

So you confront em bout some shit that they found, 

And now they spooked knowin the forgeries will land the rat back in the pound. 

 

All the fools who choose to rumble with the zoo crew lose, 

Dude’s news gonna be mumbled through a loose tooth; 

You try to say you’re not to blame and you claim, 

That you were framed but at the end of the day.

Lecture - Like & Follow

A single wire, wrapped in an infinite spiral, each end terminating into the core of a dying star. The entirety is pulsing magnetic radiation, pouring a vibrational dawn into the vast expanse of the universe. It is “Incandescent”, a single from Sam Forslund, Montana’s best kept electronica secret.

The whole track is a blistering, sweeping opera of glitchy synths, sad boi vocals, and poignant quotes on the very nature of incandescence that Forslund is so eager to explore. It draws attention like a distant black-hole, pulling every molecule into a single point of captivation.

Massive celestial bodies collide, glittering fractured continents flying into space, and with “Incandescent” Forslund deftly conducts the requiem.
